These Lucerne concerts are great. Unfortunately Switzerland in general and Lucerne in particular are incredibly expensive. So at least for me another trip only makes sense if the are two concerts on two successive days, like 2013 when there was a John Williams and a PotC concert.

I'm hoping they do well and return to London again.

This is a Disney thing. If successful I'm sure that London and other cities will follow (and hopefully Temple of Doom).

According to Tommy Pearson, Williams will be recording the new Star Wars in London. Which I didn't expect. But all is therefore well with the world.

I believe it when I see it. Williams has made it pretty clear that he doesn't want to leave the US anymore.

This has since been retracted by the LSO.

I mean 'made it clear' in the sense that he hasn't left the country since 2005, and has refused all offers to appear in European film music events (or so the festival directors have told me). Also, Nancy Knutsen -- Williams' former PA -- told me about Williams' reluctancy to travel long-distance these days, due to his age. Which I find weird, since he travels all around the US for concerts. The distance between LA and NY isn't that much shorter than that between NY/Boston and London.

But we'll see. If he does indeed decide to make the trip for the STAR WARS recording sessions in London, it will be the surprise of the century!
    I am extremely serious.
  1. I think I would prefer the score to be performed by the LSO and conduted by someone else than it being performed by some American orchestra conducted by Williams.
Disney is rich. Can't they get the LSO over to the US? smile

SCHINDLER'S LIST THE FILM MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS A new release from BSX that has five musicians violin, piano, clarinet, trumpet and soprano. The two tracks that stood out for me are "Viktor's Tale" and "Dracula." Both seem to lend themselves to piano and clarinet and piano and violin.

  2. Star Wars has been confirmed to be recording in LA:

Not very surprising all things considered, I'll gratefully receive any new John Williams score, 'Star Wars' or other, regardless of where it's recorded.

You wouldn't be saying that if it was performed by the Orlando Pops. skull

"The music will be recorded over several months..."

Does anyone else find that a little odd?

I do. It was my first thought. That must be a very costly way to do it. If it wasn't SW and if it wasn't John Williams - I can't imagine any other situation for a studio to make such consessions.

All recent news considered, it looks like things are becoming encreasingly exhausting for the maestro.

I certainly hope for John Williams to depart from the franchise on his own volition and on a high note. I like to think of THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS that - I believe - was one of Barry's finest moments. It dreads me to think of STAR TREK NEMESIS that marked Goldsmith's departure from that franchise.

  4. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a way to reshape the score to eventual re-editing. (Something that clearly wasn't budgeted for on the new trilogy.)

Not at all. I wish this had been the case with the prequel scores. This hopefully avoids awful re-editing of the music and/or tracking of previously existing music. If there are last minute changes to the cut, Williams is able to re-write the cues and record them locally. I really like this idea!

Regarding the minor health issue John Williams had, it looks like it in deed has been corrected. He did a presentation at the ASCAP Film & TV Awards on March 9th, and he looks absolutely fine to me smile
