This past September John Williams conducted the NY Philharmonic featuring selections from John Williams memorable scores for Harry Potter and Memoirs of a Geisha, and a salute to the films of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Another highlight: a tribute to the classic musicals of director Stanley Donen (Singin' In The Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Royal Wedding, Anchors Aweigh and more) hosted by the legendary director himself.

You can hear that concert On-Demand for the next two weeks by going to...

  1. You might know the deal from James Newton Howard´s thread. Please name your TOP THREE John Williams scores, not more, not less, and please use a ranking from 1st to 3rd place. I´ll make a list of all entries. Might be fun to do this for more composers and then have a DeathMatch between the #1 scores of all composers... biggrin

Oh, and BTW, no Star Wars Saga or Indiana Jones Trilogy entries, please, I want specific episodes and titles. And I know I´m mean. biggrin

    1st place: E.T.
    2nd place: Schindler´s List
3rd place: Superman - The Movie

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. E.T.
    3. Empire of the Sun

Ok... I'm only going to pick one Indiana Jones score or else my list would look like this...

    1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    3. The Empire Strikes Back

So here is the actual list.

    1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

It kills me leaving off E.T., Superman and Schindler's List!

  2. Don´t ask. It BURNS to leave out things like Indiana Jones or Star Wars, or Far and Away (which I love dearly). I love his new themes in HP 3. I couldn´t live without playing Memoirs of the Geisha at least once a month. Yeah, this IS one of the hardest ones I guess... you should really take your time with it.

This is a super hard listing crazy , JNH was easy-peasy, a minnow in comparison.

    A "top" 3....

    1) Close Encounters Of The 3rd Kind

    2) Jane Eyre

    3) E.T. The Extraterrestrial

    I'd say:
    • Schindler's List
    • E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
    • Memoirs Of A Geisha

Based on that, Ralph Kruhm will give each of these scores 2 points. tongue

I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  3. This is ridiculous to do this for Williams. With James Newton Howard, people seem to be converging to the same 5-6 titles out of a whole career. Here's you'll hardly get any consistency - there's too much that's good.

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. AI, Artificial Intelligence
    3. Memoirs of a Geisha

But with Williams, you could almost use a completely random method of selection (at least, after 1975) and end up with three great scores. There are just so many!
  4. Indeed. That's what makes James Newton Howard so ideal as a choice - SIGNS and others stand out because of the flatness of the surrounding terrain.

Well, for someone like me Erik, 'Raiders' happened after I'd been into Williams for some 8 years or so.

However, asked on another day I'd probaly say 'Raiders', Star Wars, Superman etc, in fact, I had Superman as # 3 until I thought about E.T. and changed it.

I'm certain that if you put the same survey up at FSM there'd be plenty of people who would hold it in the #1 regard that you do?

'Raiders' is a phenomenal score and easily one of my all time favourites.

I'm the only person with CE3K as my # 1 so far?
