I like WAR HORSE, film and score. The film was light on substance - the horse is the main character, so how deep can you go? But it's just a masterful crafted film from a masterful director. I love Spielberg, so take that into account, but it's a beautiful film. And I thought the scenes of the horse in no-man's-land were excellent.

I agree mostly, but I love horses so I'm biased.

Good review and I have no doubt that I will enjoy this score, but those are some boring-sounding track titles.

    biggrin

I never listen to those Christopher Young and Michael Giacchino scores that feature the play-on-words track titles. Not reverential enough to the Film Score.

    wink

No, I far prefer Goldenthal serious, musicological approach (Lento, Adagio etc.)
    I am extremely serious.

I much prefer Zimmer's meta approach (Budget Meeting, Too Many Notes Not Enough Rests). The self awareness of the composer just makes the music so much better.

"Hurried Performance of Simplistic Theme" is somewhere on an unreleased promo. Don't bother.

They're not nearly as descriptive or epic as those on James Horner scores. Example: "We Have Travelled So Far, It Is Time to Return to Our Path", "Becoming One of "The People", Becoming One with Neytiri", "The Prize of One's Life... The Prize of One's Mind"...

Horner's are laughably bad! But whatever, Williams can call a track "Fartacular Shit Sandwich in B Flat" for all I care, just a lot as the music doesn't sound like the title. wink

James Horner's track titles are truly objects of wonder. I need to come up with another pretend set of them some day.

James, please: Make James Horner titles for Inception biggrin

The only time, though only after actually having seen the film, Horner's track titles made me somehow angry was the case of The Life Before Her Eyes. While "Young Diana's Conscience Is Finally Formed" rises to new levels of hilarity, the problem with that score is that it's huge, really huge spoilers for the movie itself.

I had fun with a friend trying to make a score tracklist for various composers scoring a porn movie. I lost the conversation after a format, but some of these (namely Horner and Goldsmith) were hilarious.

Oh please not Giacchino and his weak limp recordings for Star Wars... crazy
Unless of course he can bring the MoH sound back...that would be perfect.
But recent Giacchino, including Star Trek...nooooooooo vomit

I'm no big fan of Giacchino either, although I did like the score for JOHN CARTER quite a bit.

The question is -- should you get a composer that knows how to EMULATE the Williams sound very well (John Debney, Joel McNeely, Mike Verta and so on) or should you get someone with a more original sound that still manages to reference Williams?

I would go for the latter, although I have no particular names. I don't really like to speculate that much, plus we don't really know what the aesthetic approach will be.

When that is said, however, I would prefer it if Williams himself did the sequels for as long as he could. He's even said that he wants to try!
    I am extremely serious.

The article is bollocks; No Rombi, No Desplat, perhaps written by someone who thinks the world starts and ends in Murica.

Desplat would be my first choice; Zimmer* a close second. Otherwise it might be cool to have a young unknown guy or a genre guy who's never scored anything similar before; try to recreate the magic of Lord of the Rings where huge project + really surprising composer choice = EPIC WIN.

*not because I want Star Wars to sound like an RC score, but because absolutely nobody is better at spotting emotional action sequences than him. Instead of the dull stage performances that lightsaber fights feel like in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, we could have something like the "Marry Me" fight in At World's End, which despite the utter cheesiness of the actual situation, is one of the most movingly scored scenes I've ever experienced in my life. And I do believe there's enough brass in that scene to indicate that Zimmer is capable of capturing the Star Wars feel.

Here's an interested discussion on the matter which I was honored to be a part of.
    http://blog.tracksounds.com/2012/11/sou … -wars.html

Giacchino's the logical choice. He's a Star Wars super fan, he's already worked in the Star Wars universe with Star Tours (which he worked closely with Williams on), his Disney's favourite composer, etc. It's his to loose. I would also love for McNeely to do this or bring Broughton, Holdridge, Talgorn, and/or McKenzie into the limelight.

Personally, I would want some one that can write in the Williams style. Big, bold themes, colorful orchestrations and purely symphonic performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. That sort of sound has dominated Star Wars from the beginning and continues into all other Star Wars mediums. Episode 7 is a continuation of an already established storyline and a big change musically would be off putting. Williams created the musical blueprint for Star Wars and any composer coming on board is obligated to follow those blueprints.

It would surely be a MASSIVE improvement on George Lucas, hell, it might even have a decent script.

Absolutely! Remember, he almost directed Return of the Jedi. Anyway, Spielberg has already said no.
