Just one tiny question, could I post a review this friday? It's for a composer we met in Spain, and I would like to contact him. And a review does help then wink

If you are talking about Marc Timón, you can reach him through Facebook. He is looged in very frequently wink

I can't wait to read your review of 'Witches'!

    PD Good work Alan! beer

it is indeed Marc Timon, I'll definitely contact him once I've posted the review

I tried to be as honest as possible, but I'll think you'll agree with me on most of the things wink

    Nice!

Oh, just one little thing, in case you wanna mention it in your review: the lyrics of tracks 1 ('Main Theme'), 3 ('The Village Dance'), 10 ('Love Theme of Violant and the Troubadour') and 13 ('Isolda's Lament') are sung in catalan wink

  2. I've just uploaded a review of Niall Byrne's lovely score to the film Cairo Time.

    http://www.maintitles.net/reviews/cairo-time/

It features a Einaudi-styled main theme that I recommend you take a listen to at any good digital music store.

Glad to see a review per day from Alan. I can't work that quickly. I'm listening to Perry's Jamestown Concerto, am considering the silent music he wrote for early American silent films, and will definitely review the Legrand release which is quite a different take on his music with the harp getting some solo passages and theme carrying.

    listen to more classical music!
  3. I am choosing a lot of short scores at the moment to get a bit more experience at writing different reviews as well as keeping up a relatively quick rate. This frequency of reviews being posted will not last!

The only reason it got put up on both places is I was trying again to see if it would work. Otherwise it would be an exclusive thing.

  5. Review of the wonderful Witches scores, discovered during the Ubeda festival in 2011.

Thank to Marc Timon for being such a gentle soul, and thanks to Marcel for getting the score from him wink

A good review Alan and the kind of score that really piques my interest.

To be honest, I found the score a little disappointing.
I had hoped for a stronger ethnic undercurrent (well, that's just my own preconceptions and not in any way the composer's responsibility), but more importantly, for arather 'classic' soundtrack sound, I found the release to be a little lacking on the thematic side.

It was certainly a pleasant enough listen.
Just not a very memorable one.

  8. It was something that was asked of the composer, not to make it ethnic-sounding. And I like the very limited use of the vocals. The lack of the vocals doesn't leave some sort of void though. As I mention in the review, the unusual emphasis in the orchestration makes for an interesting listen throughout.

Looking into what the film is about I am not sure how many themes are actually needed. One for the lion, one for the lion's human "protector" with some embellishments of these themes with the vocals, playful motifs, dramatic action scoring...for the film I think there is just enough of everything for a 30 minute score.

  9. Damn! That is the last time I try to vote for a score from my phone. I had forgotten to do my vote when I uploaded my recent review. Now I think that I have just given White Lion two stars. And I may have done it twice. sad

I hadn't had the chance to read your review of 'Witches' yet. I finally did! smile

Glad you liked it mate, I completely agree with your comments. Even if, sometimes, one wonders how it would sound with a bigger orchestra, the music, as it is presented on the cd, is really good. I love the themes, the orchestrations, etc. I really hope Marc Timón gets good projects, not easy if he stays in Spain, but still, I hope he can keep delivering such good music as 'Witches'.

hehe, I thought you would like it. Marc already contacted me, and he'll read the review as soon as possible. But it is indeed a great score, the themes are something of a rarity these days, and I thought sometimes they sounded a bit small. Like I said, a larger sounding recording or orchestra could make them even more magical than they already are.

Anyway, he knows how to compose, hopefully he'll get the chance to develop his style in the future

I am trying too keep away from things that are too familiar. Sometimes it is more interesting to read a new review for a score that has received little attention rather than read the 7th review of a "mainstream" title.

But it does mean that the lesser-known titles do not generate as much immediate interest.
