I saw it last night and wasn't too impressed either, i can see it being a frame-by-frame remake but without the emotional impact, like LET ME IN compared to the superb original. I'll see the original brothers too; Thomas Newman's score is nice at places, but a cold observant otherwise; Soderqvist's score is beautiful.

    So, we've got coming up

    MMS10022 • IN A BETTER WORLD
    Music Composed by Johan Söderqvist
Released on October 26, 2010 • CD only

Continuing our exciting relationship with Swedish composer Johan Söderqvist (Let the Right One In), we are proud to release his brilliant and unique score for the critically acclaimed drama In a Better World. This is Johan's eighth film together with Danish auteur Susanne Bier, and while the music certainly has the same touch of intimacy and emotional depth as the previous Bier/Söderqvist collaborations (such as Brother and After the Wedding), In a Better World is also highly original in its use of instrumental colors. Carrying the tone in the score is the African instrument Mbira as well as some heartbreakingly beautiful vocal solos - everything elegantly sweeped in Söderqvist's very personal mix of warm string writing and shimmering electronics. In a Better World could very well be both Susanne Bier's and Johan Söderqvist's most impressive works to date. Not to be missed!

    And there's still unreleased:

EARTH MADE OF GLASS, documentary. Listen to a large portion of the score here:

    New scores:
    2011
KING OF DEVIL'S ISLAND (Kongen av Bastøy, Marius Holst)

    2010
    LIMBO (Maria Sødahl)

    Info from his website:

AUGUST, 2010. Johan is currently working on the upcoming Norwegian drama King of Devil's Island (Kongen av Bastøy), directed by Marius Holst (Cross My Heart and Hope to Die, Dragonfly) and starring Stellan Skarsgård, Benjamin Helstad and Kristoffer Joner. The film is a period piece, taking place at a boys home in the early 20th century, and the story tells the story about a new inmate who leads an uprising against the brutal regime.

    Johan finishes work on 'Limbo'

JULY, 2010. Limbo, a Norwegian feature film starring Bryan Brown, Lena Endre and Line Verndal, is currently being prepared for its September 10 release and Johan has just put the finishing touches on the score. The film is directed by Maria Sødahl.

Disappointed with Mikael's "CD only" releases (not the music but the format). A shame that a selection of them aren't available in a convenient download option.

I was hoping that Jackboots On Whitehall would be available as an mp3 download.

The "CD only" format has to do with rights and the production companies refusin to licence us the digital distribution rights - we then feel that it's still quite attractive to be able to offer a great score on CD for all the collectors out there who want the physical product.

This does not automatically mean that the score won't be available digitally from the usual outlets - it's just not available through MovieScore Media. For instance, Johan Söderqvist's "In a Better World" is already available on iTunes directly from the production company and we are handling the CD which is coming out a few weeks later.

  2. I certainly appreciate that these are to do with the available rights to how to release the music and I am pleased that it is receiving a CD release (and maybe a download release).

Your digital purchase option on your other titles is so great and effortless that I sometimes assume that all your coming soon releases are going to be downloads - so I can have them in good quality and as soon as I possibly can!!

Listen to a cue from Kongen av Bastøy

This is probably going to be another great score. It makes use of a Norwegian fiddle. Going to see the film in a few days.

It's last year's biggest Norwegian film, and we had actually hoped for an Oscar nom. But alas...

Haven't seen it yet myself, but Söderqvist is always a surefire hit.
    I am extremely serious.

Has anyone seen Hævnen? I can tell you it's a great film...
  4. What sort of film is it? You've got me interested now.

All of Susanne Bier's recent films have a (Hollywood) story. But beyond the predictable story, it's executed in a very touching arthouse style and observes human behaviour brilliantly. I know that not everyone likes this combination, even I would perhaps rate Hævnen a bit higher if it wasn't for the script. But still a really solid film.
  5. Oh, this is the Bier film. I didn't know it was Norwegian. smile

I was talking about the Danish/Swedisch co-production Hævnen ( In A Better World), not about the Norwegian Kongen av Bastøy (King of Devil's Island).

  7. I've heard "Eli's Theme" from Let the Right One In, and I love it. I'm not a fan of 'scary' music, however (by that I mean dissonant, eerie music with the occasional orchestral “gotcha” blast), so I’m wondering if this album has a lot of that, or if I should just download a couple of highlight tracks. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

It's pretty much half sweet melancholy music and half scary music. The nicest music is tracks 2,3,5,10,13,15,20,21.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  8. About LTROI, it's credited the use of bass waterphone, hurdy-gurdy. In which cues were played? Becuase with all the synth that Soderqvist used, it's really hard to notice a real instrument from a electronic one.
  9. Thanks, Scribe. I'm on it.

Have you guys seen the new trailer for KON-TIKI, scored by Söderqvist (replacing Trond Bjerknes, who I know personally, but that's another story)? It's the most expensive movie ever produced in Norway, and it also happens to be about Thor Heyerdahl, one of my childhood heroes:
