  1. I just watched the first Mission Impossible film, and Elfman indeed used some chorus in the score. So it's not unusual that Giacchino uses it in the fourth one.

  3. People shouldn't emulate nobody. They need to have a voice of it's own. In this years, people emulate Williams or Zimmer. Giacchino has his own voice. He has done scores where makes homage to people like Williams and Mancini, but his own music is recognizable.

    And MI2 has it as well. Mission Impossible 3? No choir. What nonsense! wink rolleyes

    Actually, what's much more important is the ability to ADAPT and have the ability to write in MANY different styles in order to give the FILM it's own unique voice.

  5. On one hand, you are right, Erik, but on the other hand, I do agree with Yonathan that while it's very important to give the film an unique voice, the composer should be able to retain his own.

    Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is a great example of how a composer can combine giving a certain sound for the movie (the score plays quite like a Bond score to me) with retaining his own unmistakable voice.

    Are we listening to the same score? My god the new m:i score is so underwhelming...and what's with the slow, soft porn jazzy renditions of the main theme? where's the kick ass nerve of the previous score?

    You can keep the identity of the individual instruments without making the whole thing sound dead, dry and sterile.

  7. I agree. There's scores where the mix don't let the instruments to be clear enough.
  8. The Giacchino scores recorded by Dan Wallin sound terrible. Even a 120 piece orchestra sounds like it's playing in a bathroom.

    I think Frontline is one of Steve Smith's weakest recordings for Giacchino. I'd say the best Smith/Giacchino recordings are Underground and SWON (<-- Just you Timmer)

    The best Wallin/Giacchino recording is Ratatouille. And John Carter sounds like it's bit more spaced out than usual. I think the best Wallin recording out there is his recording of Joel McNeely's Iron Will.

    But overall, I don't like Wallin's mixes. Everything is center heavy with the strings panned hard left and right! IMO, it sounds muddy and you don't really hear every instrument. I've said this before, you should have heard what Mercenaries sounded like before Wallin remixed it! But what do I know? If Michael loves what Wallin does then that's all that matters.

    Underground and SWON (for Timmer wink ) sound mighty fine, but Frontline is like in a whole other league IMO. I'm not talking on a purely technnical level, because I have zero knowledge about that, but on the level of orchestral power. The percussion, the brass section and choir sound totally awesome...

    The last two minutes of The Rowhouses blows me away every time. And I play that motherfucker loud, because it's that great!!! punk

    I find the recording far too thin! There's a thump to the recording for sure but I feel that the highs made the recording far too ear splitting! It also seems like there is something lacking in the mid range.

    Just compare the balanced recordings of MOH/SWON to Frontline... all three recorded by the same engineer in the same venue.

    But different ears hear different things.
