Far more pretty than the Jane Eyre character is supposed to be, anyway, if you go by the Brontë book. She's supposed be quite plain. Come to think of it, there haven't really been any JANE EYRE filmatizations that have made her as fair/plain as she's supposed to be. Always a bit too pretty.

Check out the 2006 BBC adaptation, starring Ruth Wilson. I think it's probably the most spot on adaptation and casting so far.

    Thanks, I will.

I really liked the recent film adaptation and think it's the best version of the story I've seen, but even here Mia Wasichowska(!?) is way too beautiful for the title role.

I listened to Part 1 last night Erik, good stuff and a nice reminder that Williams did some great jazzy tracks to scores that I ( mostly ) don't like. A shame you didn't play The Miracle from HEIDI but then again you wouldn't have had a good lead-in for the Heidi/Football story which, by the way, if it had happened here in the UK would probably have led to TV stations being razed to the ground wink

Thanks Timmer! Yeah, it was a tought decision to go with HEIDI's Main Title and not The Miracle.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

It's a variable album. There are some absolutely horrible and grating tracks there, like "Tevye's Dreams". "If I were a Rich Man" was also over-sung when I was in primary school (but that's no fault of the score, of course). Furthermore, Williams' orchestrations feel a bit....well, over-orchestrated at times (very thick!). I think the work is overrated overall, but there are occasional highlights.

A TRIBUTE TO BERNARD HERRMANN - PART I
    GUEST HOST: Amer Zahid

Cinematic Sound is proud to add another personality to our ever expanding roster of guest hosts. Amer Zahid is a lifelong film music aficionado and collector from Karachi, Pakistan. His formal introduction to film music began at age 7 with John Williams’ SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE in the late 70′s and it opened the flood gates for his love of film music. Amer has written for Lukas Kendall’s Film Score Monthly, Len Mullinger’s Film Music on the Web as well as other internet based film music review websites. Amer’s favorite composers are John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Miklos Rozsa, Maurice Jarre and of course Bernard Herrmann. Herrmann’s music from Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO and VERTIGO had a profound effect on him and was quick to embrace the works of legendary Golden Age composer.

In this first part of Cinematic Sound’s celebration of Bernard Herrmann’s 100th anniversary, (which was actually last year – Bernard Herrmann was born on June 29, 2011 – so we are a little late to the party, big whoop, wanna fight about it?) Amer will be exploring, among other things, Herrmann’s career with legendary directors Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock and presenting music from THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, ON DANGEROUS GROUND, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, VERTIGO, 5 FINGERS, THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO and THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR. http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1981

Amer Zahid as guest? Cool to hear his voice. He's a "legendary" member of our community, being among the first 'magnificent 11' on Lukas' correspondence list, back when FSM was just a newsletter in the early 90's. I was always amused by that list. Various Americans spread across the US continent, and then BOOM!, suddenly a guy from Pakistan on there, of all places. smile

    GUEST HOST: Amer Zahid

Cinematic Sound’s celebration of Bernard Herrmann’s 100th anniversary continues with part two of Amer Zahid’s FIRE & PASSION: A TRIBUTE TO BERNARD HERRMANN. In this second and final installment Amer presents music from arguably the greatest debut film score of all time to Orson’s Welles’ 1941 classic CITIZEN KANE. He also explores Herrmann’s fruitful collaboration with legendary director Alfred Hitchcock with selections from PSYCHO, THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY, MARIE and TORN CURTAIN. Amer provides an in-depth commentary on Herrmann’s collaboration with mentor and friend Alfred Newman on THE EGYPTIAN and you’ll also hear selections from the 1955 western THE KENTUCKIAN as well as music from the post-Hitchcock scores to Francois Truffaut’s FAHRENHEIT 451 and Brain DePalma’s OBSESSION. http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=2066
