Last Thursday I made my second guest appearance on Tracksounds film music podcast called The Soundcast. I, along with host Christopher Coleman, Marius Masalar, Richard Buxton and Edmund Meinerts did a marathon run through the bountiful decade of the nineties. We also chatted about Austin Wintory’s video game score for JOURNEY and responded to a few listener emails. It was another entertaining and enlightening experience and hope that I can re-join the gang sometime in the near future!

Listen to the program HERE or you can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes HERE. And explore the Tracksounds web site by going HERE.

A TRIBUTE TO JOEL GOLDSMITH (1957-2012)

On April 29th the film music community lost yet another film composer years before his time. Joel Goldsmith was the eldest son of legendary and Academy Award winning composer, Jerry Goldsmith. He began scoring films in the late seventies and is best known for his work on the Stargate spin off TV series’ and films. Over the course of his career he created fantastic music for numerous films, TV shows and video games such as LASERBLAST (co-composed with Richard Band), MOON 44, SHILOH, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (written along side his father), KULL THE CONQUEROR, DIAMONDS, CALL OF DUTY 3 and more. We will be presenting music from all of those projects as well as a few surprises. http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=2174

For more information about Joel Goldsmith please visit his personal site at http://www.freeclyde.com.

    LA LA LAND RECORDS ROUND-UP

Cinematic Sound would like to again extend a sincerest thanks and appreciation to a record label that has supported this program since its inception. La La Land Records have released over two hundred albums in the past nine years starting with a fantastic re-issue of Elmer Bernstein’s ZULU DAWN. Since that time Michael V. Gerhard and Matt Verboys have continued to support this program and we are so very proud to have every single La La Land album in our library. It has been almost two long years since we last said thank you to La La Land Records so with the CD’s piling up we are very proud to present another three hour tribute to this fantastic film music label.

During the course of this program you will hear fifteen albums that have been released since July 2010 including COPERNICUS STAR (Korzeniowski), FIRST KNIGHT (Goldsmith), BREAKDOWN (Poledouris), THE GOLDEN CHILD (Barry/Colombier), FOREVER YOUNG (Goldsmith), 1941 (Williams), DIE HARD (Kamen), BATMAN FOREVER (Goldenthal), PLANET OF THE APES (Elfman) and many, many more.

That's part why the younger generation have no understanding what real film music is about. To actually hear something amazing to support the images, to hear something genuinely memorable. They all expect it to fade into the background, buried under sound effects and call that awesome. rolleyes

And man I'd love to hear this show, but I don't have time. sad

    UPDATE: October 18, 2012

SKYFALL AND 50 YEARS OF JAMES BOND

Let the celebration begin! The summer hiatus is over… wait a minute, aren’t we already 26 days into Autumn?! Anyway, it’s great to be back and what a great time of the year to make my triumphant return. Two of the biggest scores of the year have come across my desk in the last few days (big thanks to Sony Music Masterworks) and I have decided that SKYFALL would be the first of the two I would feature on the program as 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of James Bond on the silver screen. Dr. No, starring Sean Connery, made its debut October 5th, 1962.

Nine seperate composers have tackled a James Bond film score and the newest member to the club is Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Road To Perdition, The Shawshank Redeption.) Newman was brought on board for this 23rd Bond outing by his frequent collaborator Sam Mendes who is in the directors chair this time around. During this special episode of Cinematic Sound Radio we will be featuring over 30 minutes of music from Thomas Newman’s highly entertaining new score to SKYFALL.

To round out the program you will have the opportunity to hear some of my favourite cues and tracks from some of my favourite James Bond scores including THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, TOMORROW NEVER DIES and CASINO ROYALE all composed by David Arnold. You will also hear music from A VIEW TO A KILL, ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE, MOONRAKER, GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS by John Barry. I will also sneak in a few tracks from LICENCE TO KILL by Michael Kamen and John Altman’s arrangement of Monty Norman’s classic James Bond theme from the tank chase scene in GOLDENEYE!

    THIS JUST IN #19
featuring LINCOLN and RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

On our first new and recent CD releases program of the year… I know, we are almost at the end of the year… we have a massive 3 hour plus program lined up for you that could go down as one of the very best episodes of Cineamtic Sound ever produced based on the musical selections alone. Every single score that you will hear is dynamite!

We open the program with the radio premiere of music from Steven Spileberg’s new film LINCOLN featuring music by John Williams. You will also hear music from RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and ARGO – both scores composed by Alexandre Desplat. Also scheduled is music from CLOUD ATLAS by Tom Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, LO IMPOSIBLE (THE IMPOSSIBLE) by Fernando Velazquez, THUNDERCATS by Kevin Kliesch, GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES by Frederik Wiedmann and FRANKENWEENIE by Danny Elfman.

During the course of the program you will also hear short selections from FOR GREATER GLORY: THE TRUE STORY OF CRISTIADA by James Horner, PARADE’S END by Dirk Brosse, TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE by Marco Beltrami, THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS by Theodore Shapiro and PARANOMAN by Jon Brion.

By the way, if you were wondering where THIS JUST IN #18 is, I’m still editing it! It was supposed to premiere the same time as this program but I got a bit behind. THIS JUST IN #18 will be a 2012 new and recent CD releases round-up program. Stay tuned…

    Finished part 1. Thoughts:

LINCOLN is very nice. Academy award nomination for sure. Some of it was a little less interesting to listen to, but on the whole I liked it a lot. That theme is lovely and reminds me of something he wrote previously. JFK maybe?

I really liked the CRISTIADA piece on there. People have been bagging on that score, but I really liked that piece.

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS was fun. It wasn't like any Desplat I've heard before. It was kind of John Williams-y (orchestrated by Pope, right?). I look forward to listening to that again.

Finished the second show. ARGO isn't my thing, other than those two tracks you mentioned, Erik. The rest of the stuff on this show was all excellent. I absolutely loved THE IMPOSSIBLE. What a gorgeous score!! That will be an instant buy from me as soon as it's released.

    THIS JUST IN #18

Before This Just In Show #19 went live last week we had been working on this particular program featuring a round-up of important 2012 new releases. But then a whole slew of really important new releases came across my desk in the span of a couple of days (most notably SKYFALL, LINCOLN and RISE OF THE GUARDIANS) which forced me to delay editing of this program. But we are now all caught up so here is our long delayed This Just In #18 program.

On this mammoth three part show we will be presenting music from JOHN CARTER (Giacchino), THERE BE DRAGONS (Folk), BRAVE (Doyle), THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (Horner), PROMETHEUS (Streitenfeld), ANNA KARENINA (Marianelli), DARK SHADOWS (Elfman), LA HERMANDAD: THE BROTHERHOOD (Bataller), ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT (Powell) and JOURNEY (Wintory).

During the course of the program you will hear short selections from JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (Lockington), THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (Zimmer), BIG MIRACLE (Eidelman), BLACK GOLD (Horner), THE AVENGERS (Silvestri), THE EXPENDABLES 2 (Tyler), MEN IN BLACK III (Elfman), GAME OF THRONES: SEASON 2 (Djawadi), DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX (Powell) and KINGDOMS OF AMALUR: RECKONING (Kirkhope).

    2012 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

Autumn is probably my favorite season. The cooler weather, the colour of the leaves, Thanksgiving, pumpkin pie, pumpkin beer… but most importantly it’s Halloween season which gives me an excuse to watch scary films every night and indulge in over the top horror film music. Music written for the horror genre is unapologetic and it’s the kind of music that is encourage to stand out and play an important part in a film’s narrative. On todays show we are going to celebrate the horror film score for a second year in a row! Hopefully this becomes an annual tradition here at Cinematic Sound Radio the way it was when I was on terrestrial radio all those years ago at C101.5 FM.

On the program today we are going to be presenting over 2 hours of creepy film music including SNOW WHITE: A TALE OF TERROR (Ottman), THE TALL MAN (Young), PRINCE OF DARKNESS (Carpenter), THE DESCENT (Julyuan), SPECIES II (Shearmur), INSIDIOUS (Bishara), FRIDAY THE 13th (Manfredini), EVENT HORIZON (Kamen/Orbital), SINISTER, (Young), HYDE’S SECRET NIGHTMARE (Sensini) and many more.

And if you are still craving for more Halloween themed music then have a listen to last years Halloween special featuring over 3 hours of classical and film music.
