I don't. It's Erik who doesn't like my opinion of the score, or how I evaluate it (which is largely positive, by the way). I'm actually happy for him that he loves it so much.

To be honest, I don't really know what we're arguing about. We both like the score. I just like it a little bit less than him for reasons previously cited.

  1. I do.

You are arguing about the structure of the score and presentation of themes. It's not about liking it or not, indeed. smile

It's obvious now that Thor didn't pay much attention to the score AND didn't even READ my posts.

We all see different things in a score when we evaluate it. Apparently, I experience it somewhat differently than Erik when it comes to structure and themes. That's the way the world goes.

Anyway, I suggest giving it a few more listens. Actually, first, go back to the first score and re-evaluate the themes in that score. Then come back to the second score and pay attention to those old themes and the new ones. I think you'll find that the old and new themes breathe just like they do in the first score.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 reminds me of Howard Shore's approach to the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It's as if Powell didn't stop writing in 2010. Both scores just blend seamlessly with one another.

  2. You can't "experience" themes differently! They're either there or they're not. dizzy

We were not talking about the appearance of themes, which are clearly there. We -- or at least I -- felt the thematic bars in most of the tracks (with some notable exceptions) were a bit short and jammed in between loads of mickey-mousey-type bombasticm, like the rather tiresome "Battle of Bewilderbeast". The overall balance (or structure) of the total listening experience wasn't as well-done as the first one, IMO. A bit too "full-on" for my taste. Perhaps it would have flowed better if they'd omitted some 20 minutes or so from the 70 minutes it has now.

But anyway, I'm definitely giving it a few more shots to see if anything changes. In fact, it's playing right now. The tracks that are good, are really good.
