Thanks Martijn. Let me know what you think. I didn't go into too much technical detail about Tomlinson's recording style as I wanted the music and recordings to speak for themselves but I hope there is enough info in there to illustrate why Tomlinson was such a legend in the industry.

I also linked to Chris Malone's superb articles on Eric Tomlinson's career and his recordings of Star Wars, which are must reads.

    Enjoy!

I've still to catch up with your show Erik and wonder if any of the anecdotes in this article made it into your show. ( The Herrmann one is typical of the cranky composer wink )

The only Herrmann story I shared was that he insisted on having music played during the main title of Sisters. DePalma, initially didn't want music during the main title sequence, but eventually caved.

Agree with #1 and 2. I think Giacchino offers some of his best action scoring to date (the two "Flying Dinosaur Fight" tracks are INSANE!)... but Williams and Star Wars, you just can't beat that smile
  1. I love the Dinosaur Fight cues but they aren't even the best action music in Jupiter Ascending by a longshot..."Shadow Chase", "It's a Hellava Chase" and "Commitment" beat it out with the latter one of the top 5 cues of the year for me.

For sheer action music, I actually prefer Jupiter Ascending to The Force Awakens. But the latter is much stronger thematically and narratively. They're my #1 and #2 picks for the year as well, and very very close, but I think I'd give Williams the edge.

They are ALL excellent tracks! What I love about the two Dinosaur Fight cues is their "raw energy" (in lack of better words), especially Flying Dinosaur Fight With Guts... I mean 0:39 - 0:49, that's the coolest 10 seconds on the whole album, IMO smile But SO many great things to highlight from that score.

And you are right, from an action perspective Jupiter is probably a better score, although I love the whole "Follow Me/The Falcon" cue (Finn's Theme?) from The Force Awakens. That's just brilliant action writing!
  2. I'll probably be in the minority but the more I hear TFA the less I like it. I could never call one of his better ones, definitely not of the last 10 years. The score is just glorified mickey-mousing. Admittedly, it's higher quality than what we get from most composers, but if I compare it to the consistency or thematic depth of the classic trilogy (or even the prequels) it definitely lags behind. I can't get into The Force Awakens' musical identity, and after a listen I can barely remember anything standing out, except for Rey's theme and the one for the resistance. And I don't think seeing the film will make me change my opinion.

I wasn't expecting a new 'Empire' or 'Jedi' but I'm seeing myself not returning as often to this new Star Wars as I had hoped.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.

    BREAKING NEWS:

    CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO JOINS WROCK

A few months ago, WROCK’s CEO, Gerry Gallagher, emailed me asking if I wanted to provide a film, TV and video game music radio show for his station. I obliged and decided to produce a pilot episode. I sent that show off to Gerry earlier this week, and yesterday afternoon I got confirmation that I will be apart of his station. I couldn’t be more thrilled!

So, until the first episode airs on WROCK, I thought I’d give my loyal CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO listeners a sneak peak at the first episode.

The format of the show will be a bit different then what you might be used to from an episode of CINEMATIC SOUND. The show will be two hours long. My goal is to play at least 3 scores from new films, TV shows and/or video games. I’m also going to feature the John Williams track of the week as he’s my favourite composer. I will also play a selection from a new recording of a previously existing score – that could be from anything like a new recording of a Golden Age classic to a new interpretation of a brand new score. I will also play a selection from a video game score; brand new or classic. I will end each program with suite of end title music.

And don’t worry, ALL WROCK shows will be archived here for you to enjoy at any time.

The pilot episode opens with the main title from STAR WARS, which is what opened my inaugural program back in September 1996. The show continues with selections from TALE OF A LAKE (Aaltio) • STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (Williams) • THE ROBE (Newman) • KUNG FU PANDA 3 (Zimmer) • DIABLO (T. Williams) • WORLD OF WARCRAFT: CATACLYSM (Various Artists) • ALIEN (Goldsmith) • PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES (Velazquez) • TAXI DRIVER (Herrmann) • BROKEN ARROW (Zimmer)

As always, and especially in this case, I would love to read your feedback and get your suggestions on how I can make this particular show better. I’m also encouraging requests for this show. So, if there is something you want to hear please let me know. Send an EMAIL with your name and what track you want to hear.
