    New release:
MAURICE JARRE'S UNPUBLISHED FRENCH FILM MUSIC performed by Robert Lafond
    DCM 131 • UPC : 771028235940
    Street date : September 1, 2011

Our program reconstructs the core of four of the first scores that Maurice Jarre (1924-2009) wrote for features films in his native France. The movies are directed by Georges Franju (Spotlight on the Murderer, Judex), Serge Bourguignon (Sundays & Cybele) and Frédéric Rossif (The Animals).

When listening to this music, one realizes that Jarre already knew the tricks of the trade and that he mastered a wide variety of genres, an essential asset for his future international career. What is perhaps the most striking appears to be the melodic richness of numerous themes. Just like Georges Delerue, who was one year younger than him, Maurice Jarre could create memorable tunes with an enviable facility.

Already recognized for his reconstruction of Delerue’s works, Robert Lafond again puts his great talent in the service of this other giant of film music. Produced with the most advanced sampling technology available, his versions faithfully reproduce Maurice Jarre’s melodies and original orchestrations, whether they consist of a few soloists or large symphonic ensembles, purely acoustic sounds or electronic ventures typical of the period.

Packed with illustrations, the bilingual 20-page booklet features track by track liner notes by producer Clément Fontaine and an introduction by Jacques Hiver, the great European Maurice Jarre specialist in Europe and himself producer of an important part of Jarre's early works in France.

N.B. As of our previous title H.G. Clouzot’s Inferno there will be no exporting of this CD through our regular generalist European distributor. From now on our new releases will be available only through specialized film music outlets and the Disques Cinemusique website. 1. I had previously only heard one cue from his rejected score to "The River Wild", but somebody took those cues from the Jarre box and loaded them; some big stuff in many places:

A WALK IN THE CLOUDS, a new re-release with extra material is being shipped from La-La Land. All one need do is look at the title and know a little of Jarre and you'll get the idea of what it is like; a very nice laid back CD.

  3. I'm glad everybody is getting what they wanted. I listened to the samples though, and was not interested at all.

Now the LLLR's "Jennifer 8" samples for him sounded very interesting. Wish he had finished that score.

I am looking forward to hearing this too. Young's used score is one of my favourites of his and what Jarre wrote for this could also become a favourite.

    TAI-PAN
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Maurice Jarre

We revisit another great score from 1986 with Maurice Jarre’s epic Tai-Pan. Jarre created one of his most powerful and surging symphonic themes for this troubled film of James Clavell’s novel about the struggle between Scottish opium smuggler Dirk Struan and the Chinese to maintain control of British-occupied Hong Kong. Bringing the novel to the screen brought its own decades- long conflict, with Hollywood, European and Chinese forces caught in its grasp.

Bryan Brown and Joan Chen starred in the film directed by Daryl Duke (The Thorn Birds).

CDs expected to begin shipping the week of July 23.

Tai-Pan is my favorite Jarre score. Good to see they did away with the 2 lengthy suites and split the tracks up!

Just to be fair... Jarre isn't one of my favorites composers. I respect the man's talents and his classics are just that but I rarely go reaching for a Jarre score when I want to listen to something... other than Tai-Pan. I hope they cleaned up the sound a bit on this new release.

  7. New release of Intrada

    POSSE / THE LAST TYCOON

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 213
    Date: 1975 / 1976
    Tracks: 29
    Time = 76:51

World premiere of two complete Maurice Jarre soundtracks, both presented in dynamic stereo sound from original multi-track session elements maintained in Paramount vaults in mint condition. First is exciting outdoor action score for 1975 Kirk Douglas western with star as director chasing down killer Bruce Dern. Music expertly melds two distinct ideas into one cohesive work: rousing Americana-tinged fanfare motif for Marshal, dramatic baritone horn motif for killer. Powerful, aggressive rhythms throughout are further highlights. In contrast, second half of CD contains rich, nostalgic score for 1976 Elia Kazan drama with terrific cast, headed by young Robert De Niro plus Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Jack Nicholson, many others. Jarre writes in signature melodic style. Lovely "End Title" stands out amongst several beautiful cues. Both scores are relatively brief: POSSE runs 30 minutes, LAST TYCOON runs 25 minutes. CD includes numerous "extras" from each score to round out disc. Lukas Kendall, Neil Bulk develop project for Intrada. Detailed notes by Jeff Bond, dramatic design work by Joe Sikoryak round out neat package. Maurice Jarre conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain!

To mark what would have been Maurice Jarre's 90th birthday, a review of a score that is almost incomprehensibly rousing even by his standards, Tai-Pan:

"Shogun" is one of the last remaining titles on my grail list.

Great and interesting review, James! I beg to differ concerning Jarre's deployment of synths in his scores. I wouldn't want to miss them in Enemy Mine or Dead Poets Society. I think those a great albums. Well, the remaster of ENEMY MINE was bullshit, whatever VS thought they were doing.

For everyone, who feels as enthusiastic about the score for "Dead Poets Society", as I do, I recommend this great review by Jon Broxton. And yes, I agree, this score needs an expansion badly!
