I've already skimmed through parts of it and that's the nicest thing I can say thus far.

  2. It's not an easy work, but it's quite fascinating to delve into.

Excerpt from a recent interview with director Antoin Fuqua, with whom Horner worked on "Southpaw". Brief but very interesting things he has to say about Horner. Heartaching... AND according to this interview Horner wrote a score for Fuquas up-coming "Magnificent Seven" movie, based on the screenplay that he read (expected to hit theaters in 2017).
Maybe we will get another Horner score in 2017? Time will tell... it certeinly is an extremly thrilling bit of news!!

CORNISH: One more thing - this film was dedicated to composer James Horner. He did the music for the movie, and he died in a plane crash last month. What was it like working with him?

FUQUA: Oh, wow. James is - he was an incredible human being. He was a filmmaker through and through. He was one of the most gentle people I've ever met. Even the way he spoke was very soft and thoughtful. He was magical. And he had this childlike wonderment in his eyes, but he was an amazing artist, an amazing poet. And I loved him, and we became friends. And James was a family man. He loved his children. He called me on a Saturday, after he watched the movie, and I said I don't have any money because it wasn't a big budget movie. And he said to me, I love the movie. I love the father-daughter relationship. Don't worry about the money. I'm just going to do it. And he did it for nothing. He paid his crew out of his own pocket. And I just found out a couple days ago his team flew out here to Baton Rouge, and they brought me all the music from "Magnificent Seven" - he had already wrote it for me based on the script.

    CORNISH: Oh, my God.

FUQUA: And he did it all off the script because he wanted to surprise me. And I thought it was a gift or something. And they all came out here and they said, Antoine, James wrote the music for "Magnificent Seven" already, and it's just glorious. And that's my memory of James.

CORNISH: Antoine Fuqua, thank you so much for speaking with us, and for sharing stories about this film.

I wonder if he's overegging it a bit and he only wrote a theme or something. It would seem odd to have written the whole score already. Time will tell. Certainly very exciting if he really has done it already.
  4. I hope it's a full score. Just a total surprise and awesome news. It would be liek a surprise parting gift for us.

    Latest review: Windtalkers

    http://www.movie-wave.net/windtalkers/

I was so convinced in my mind that this one (which I hadn't listened to for years) was very dull, I ended up having to listen to it many times over the past week, I was so taken aback at how far from dull it actually is.

Much of his music post-A Beautiful Mind was unfairly overlooked. I wonder if that was when his style of scoring was starting to become passe.

Case in point, this score and Apocalypto represented how playful he was during the 2000s.

Must revisit this one soon. Loved the movie as a kid.
  9. Can anyone here please specify which DVD edition of APOLLO 13 has the entire score running in its menu? Because mine doesn't. sad
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  10. According to FSM members early DVD's had it and further more it is not hte compelte score that is isolated; the isolated score just duplicates the incomplete score as heard on the promo.

And there's this about the sound:

The DVD isolated score is not in '"CD" format.' It is reportedly two channel 192 kbps AC3 (Dolby Digital).

And Roger said about three years ago at the Intrada forum to be patient, they're on it.

Thanks! Since the promo is somewhat hard to come by, at least in Germany, I'll take your advice and be patient.

  12. This year Apollo 13 (20th anniversary)? Stranger things have happened.

Indeed that DVD menu score wasn't the best quality. I know because I recorded it myself from that source. The promo itself (which leaked a long time ago) had way better sound.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  13. Apparently Universal approval times can take longer, plus I'm betting Horner was doing what he did with other Intrada titles by him -- mastering it in-house and some editing here and there, so with his passsing, if he didn't finish, that probably also has slowed things down.

  14. From what I know, the problem is not Universal, but it's MCA Records, which doesn't really help with expansions. It was a rare case of MCA actually handling the promos as well, so they own the publishing rights to the score proper, sadly.

Here's to hoping that Poledouris' Hunt for the Red October was a milestone step.

Out of curiosity, and with his birthday coming up... Where was he born?
In this interview he says he wasn't born in LA (contrary to what imdb lists)

Great review! The album is too long but I won't deny that the music immeasurably helps the very uneven film (which I rewatched a few months ago).
