    Info for Oct. 28th releases

I'll post the covers later, I don't want to sit on top of Bruce's awesome Heaven Can Wait/Racing with the Moon release...so go check those samples and revel in that release which is long overdue. I'm only posting now because I was looking at the covers and one is mostly just red and the other is mostly just blue. They look interesting side by side. I guess I can't help being a tease.

  1. Phew! Money saved on both the Intrada releases this time around. Means that Goldenthal's expanded Pet Sematary is a "go"!

Wondering what Martijn thinks of this release? How much music is missing? I would guess a lot but then it's been over 20 years since I saw the film.

  2. About half of the score is missing, if I remember correctly, actually.

    Two things:
    1. Do we really need an expanded release? Surely the meat of the score is excellently represented on CD, and I'm very happy with it.
    2. It's Poledouris. Ordered.

Hmmm, I'll need to bo through my collection of BSX CDs as it seems 90% of the CD is composed of pieces of earlier releases I already have. But otherwise, what a great release!

About 1:19:20 in, the end credits. That's clearly either from "Conan the Barbarian" is a re-recording, or ripping it off. Anybody know if it's original or a re-recording? Sounds like a re-recording to me; lacks the rawness of the original.

It sounds like a re-recording of Conan - it sounds too similar to be a rip-off. And the piece immediately before it sounds like Hans Zimmer/Batman. Maybe they've gone to someone like Silva for their re-recordings?

  6. With the mail today arrived the Milan re-issue of ROBOCOP. I was surprised to discover, that die digipack-CD features the full score, with the same sequencing and cue titles as the Intrada release. I thought this was the original LP content.
Frustrating about the Milan release is the total lack of credits. Does anyone know, if Milan used the same master commissioned by Intrada or if a new master was made for this release?

EDIT: I checked the Milan home page: It's a new master.

Yes, "...This reissue has been mixed from the original tapes and re-mastered for the occasion..." does suggest that it's been remastered from scratch from the original masters rather than using the Intrada remastering (assuming that Intrada also used the original masters).

My more general question is, how much more different can these two remasterings be given that they were done relatively close together? Are the majority of the differences to be heard are more to do with the personal tastes of whoever is doing the remastering rather than any technological improvements in the mastering technique?

  8. Indeed how different are these masters? Had I done more research before I would not have bought this one. I thought the album version would be a nice addition to the C&C release by Intrada. Now that I have both, Intrada and Milan, I shall compare them.
Was this release by Milan rather under-advertised? I came across it by pure chance. Curious, as it is such a popular score. Certainly the new release is good news for all who don't want to pay for the Intrada disc which has become rather pricey.
And yes, there are some basic credits on the flip cover underneath the CD. Some more detailed information, on Milan's page if not in a booklet, would have been nice though.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  9. I didn't do a wave analysis. Just by listening to the respective cues on both releases I can't tell any difference. The individual cues have the exact same length. Not even ripping software will tell the albums apart. I recommend the Milan release to anyone who does not have this score in his collection. Those who already own the Intrada release are fine with what they have.

My response to these things will always be predictable because these releases are predictable -- I'm content with the old, original soundtrack!

That being said, it's a gorgeous score. One of his best.
    I am extremely serious.
  10. While I remember not thinking much of the movie, I'm listening to For Love Of The Game and it's stunning in many parts, especially the track "The Decision". I'm not too familiar with Poledouris' work (other than The Hunt for Red October), but this one seems to be on it's own somewhere and doesn't really make me think much of baseball, but still enjoyable.

I love For Love of the Game, truly wonderful score even in the light dramatic parts. Goes to show that themes and melodies do a lot to give a score a certain kind of momentum. Even simple tracks like "Lemonade" are so wonderful to listen to.
