Stereo matrix users algorithms that extract and inter-use phase differences and phase summations / subtractions from within and between the 2 channel stereo in order to create pseudo-rear surround channels, imitations of how a sound would have sounded if it actually came from behind and above. If you compare the matrixed rear surround channels with the original material (the front stereo L-R channels from which they derived) and even better, if you compare them with ACTUAL SURROUND recorded on location simultaneously, you can hear that pseudo-surround via matrix is about clones, rather than actual sound sources. There are various methods to do this, and it's usually a combination of spectral / phasic spectrogram procedures.

And of course you have to also have the TOUCH OF GOD to be able to do this.

So, erm, in layman's terms (dizzy), you do have to use "outside help"?
But how is that worse than having to use spectro-analysers to ascertain that you aren't hearing things in the "best possible" quality?

Surely if it sounds fine, it is fine (as that is what the experience is all about (not about proving points on some meter).

    Or did I misunderstand you?

You did. I am not CLAIMING that this is what the Ubeda guys did, but rather talking in more general terms.

If you record something in plain stereo and want to pass it around as a "5.1" surround project, instead of proper surround recording which costs big money, time and effort, then it's cheating.

    Yes, I understand your point.
But I'm not really bothered by whether they did or not, to be honest.

I am interested in how it sounds.
Hence my question: will you be able to tell by simply listening they "electronically enhanced" the existing tracks, or will you need (more or less) sophisticated equipment to tell the difference?

And in case of the latter: does it then matter when it actually sounds better?

    1) Depends on how good they matrixed it, and how expensive their plugins / hardware for this job is as well as how experienced is the one who did it.

    2) Well, if it COSTS the same as properly recorded 5.1 dvd (or bluray) then it DOES matter i am afraid wink

Ah, I thought you were already dismissing the recording as a matter of fact, and was wondering on what basis, but from that response I gather you are still keeping an open mind (or ear, rather wink ).

Agreed. I'm sure they'll be clever enough to put a little disclaimer like "digitally remastered" or somesuch generic phrase to avoid anyone complaining. But that would be a pretty unpleasant trick.

    1) no i didn't do such a thing; being a sound engineer, what i can tell you is that you always get something according to what you paid for; when the sound engineer is experienced and generally not a cheater, you'll get the best available for what you paid. For what you pay, it's my 2nd point to which i am glad you agree too smile

  1. I find this discussion about sound very interesting, but after listening to the performance I can say with certainty that sound is not the problem here.

Geez, I think this was the worst version of Anvil of Crom that I´ve ever heard, and I believe I´ve heard a lot of them.

That said, how about Tadlow music takes one hell of an orchestra and a bad-ass conductor and rerecords the whole thing. That one would sell like lesbian porn featuring Jolie, Fox, and Theron.

(Please excuse the latter outburst of testosterone. But it would. At least around places like this one.)

Yeah, amateurish as i remember it then, shot from some hand-held small cameras in the balconies? And the performances weren't great either, IF It's the one they're selling.

  2. The last thing the world needs is another poorly-recorded version of CONAN THE BARBARIAN. The original will suffice in that circumstance. wink

    Interesting!

Is that tribute performance of the Hymn to Red October they did one year later in there too?

No, that tribute was performed in the 2008 concert. The DVD features the Conan concert held in 2006 wink

But since this DVD was compiled just recently that tribute in Ubeda could have been a nice addition, right?

Now that you mention it, yes, they could have added the Hymn to Red October cue (it is in the DVD of the 2008 concert they gave us this year though).

Drat! I was hoping not to spend anymore but at 1200 copies and rare interviews I'll have to pick this one up (even if the Conan recording isn't top quality [supposedly]).

I decided not to purchase it.
It's probably more worthwhile to those who actually attended the concert.
For me it's just a reminder of a lost opportunity. sad

Lost opportunity as in not attending the concert? A lot of us missed out on it. sad
But when they included the interviews and extra features it was hard not to order it. I'd rather pick this one now than regret missing out later (as with the Goldsmith dvd by MFTM).
