NP: This Girl for Hire - Bruce Broughton

Now that I have the complete CD, I've been through the score and I still greatly enjoy it. Intrada's presentation and mastering of the score are just impeccable -- the score sounds like it was recorded with an ensemble that's twice the size of the two-dozen players that performed it. Overall, a pleasing jazzy score that's a fine addition to Broughton's filmography and a worthy addition to any score collection.

I'm impressed at just how close Giacchino stayed to the style of the original cartoon music. And the old theme is there too! I guess they decided to translate the old anime to live action but not change or modify it too much. Interesting!

Definitely get WILDE - which is her masterpiece - but be more careful with the others. Get the compilation SOMETHING'S HERE, which has themes from all her scores, but unlike her score albums, doesn't repeat them too many times.

Peter Pan | James Newton Howard

Some of JNH's best music is "hidden" in between some of the more mickey-mouse music (which is brilliant in itself - I mean it must take a helluva lot of skill to compose music like this. Though not always do I have the patience for it on CD).

Perhaps this is why this score is rarely talked about, which is a shame. This is a wonderful score!

There were some very nice pieces in this, but by the end of it, I felt like it had gone nowhere. There wasn't a big finale or anything so I didn't come away with much to remember.

NP : an old compilation cassette tape - Various

This one is quite a nostalgia trip for me and indicative of what my favourite music tracks were back in 1983, recorded off LP the tape still sounds surprisingly good though the inlay card with track listing is long gone.

Tracks that have played so far include 'Riders Of Doom' from Conan, John Williams 'Dracula', Goldsmith's Twilight Zone The Movie 'Overture', Jarre's End Title theme from 'Crossed Swords' and best of all ( because I don't own it anymore ) is Ernest Gold's fabulously moving, emotional and powerful theme to CROSS OF IRON.

    NP:Speed Racer (Giacchino)

    punk

It is not what I expected...But it doesn't mean im dissapointed!

It is an eclectic mix of styles, and even If I didn't watch the Anime, I can feel the original tunes and the original spirit.

Anyway, like all this completes, I need an Official Realease to realise better the themes! and the highlights!

    Edit

Wow...the action stuff is amazing, this fusion of electric guitars, the big band style and the big orchestra make a thrilling sound!

    Where? confused

    Speaking of Giacchino however:

    NP - Alias Season 1

This is the first time I've ever heard music from Alias, and while I'm not hugely impressed with it, it still stands solid. Giacchino and electronics? Now that I didn't see coming! shocked The first initial tracks had my skeptical about how much I would enjoy it, and I actually skipped some of the quieter tracks as I found them rather boring. But when he lets the brass loose, it gets damn good! I'm now looking for season 2! punk

I love Giacchino but truly wish they had kept their working relationship with Don Davis going for Speed Racer. Giacchino has prime assignments coming out of his arse, but Davis has nothing - and he's a real talent.

NP: Casino Royale - David Arnold

The good bits really are very good, but the album is not a good way of presenting the score in its most favourable light. I really do wonder why more people don't go on about this - film music at its best makes for some wonderful albums, but presenting music like this for so long just exposes its weaknesses and gives fuel to the fire of those who belittle our music of choice.

JP: Lost Season Two - Michael Giacchino

Some great stuff here. But the same comment applies (to a far lesser extent, admittedly) as to Casino Royale.

Yup, some of the emotional stuff can drag on forever. I hugely prefer the season 1 soundtrack, and hopefully the season 3 will batter the previous two like Jack battered Ben.

If more scores were released in their complete form I think we'd have an easier time separating the truly GREAT scores from the below average ones. The truly great scores are brilliant in the film and are brilliant as a listening experience from start to finished in it's complete form AWAY from the picture. A lot of the so called BRILLIANT and MASTERPIECE scores we hear on truncated 40-50 minute albums would have a much different classification if heard in complete form. This is why I'm a big supporter of complete and chronological albums.

I don't understand what you're saying, I don't think. From the way I read it you want complete scores so that things which are presently really good, end up not being!? Shouldn't it be the other way round?

I think what he is trying to get at is a truely great score would be brilliant in the movie and on CD.

Lots of scores that are great in a movie are presented in the best possible way on CD (take out the less interesting cues when they're not in context).

If everything on CD was in it's complete form, we'd be able to work out which scores were the best (in their entirity) and which were just average (good in the movie but not on CD).

    Am I right, Erik?

For me, the album is an entirely different thing from the film score. To judge the score, you have to watch the film - not all great film music makes great album music, so I don't think even by having whole scores on albums you can judge it that way.

Anyway, got bored with Casino Royale (too much padding - someone have the guts to stop this stupid way of presenting scores on albums and actually do their job as a CD producer, please) so have moved onto one of the greatest of modern film scores - The Matrix Revolutions
