    Ah.

Off (this) topic: James, have you come across Michele Lacerenza's L'Ira di Dio? If you haven't I'd recommend hunting down some clips to take a listen.

No - thanks for the tip.

Is Michele a bloke or a sheila?

    She's a bloke.

He may have been the trumpeter on Morricone's Dollars trilogy soundtracks.

Ah - I see he's not just a bloke, he's the bloke who played trumpet on Morricone's and others' spaghetti western scores.

The "Concerto For A Killer" tracks are excellent.

Goodness knows what people are listening to when they describe Pain & Gain in the negative terms that I've been reading over the last few days.

Never likely to see this film (have many of us who have been commenting on Jablonsky's score?) I can only assess it from listening to it. There's a certain vibe to tracks such as "Sun Gym", "Definitely Guys", "Run Him Over" and 3-4 others that stand out immediately as interesting and enjoyable tracks. And it all amounts to about 20 minutes of good stuff.

There's a good number of composers who, once people have got their talons firmly attached for producing music that doesn't quite reaches their expectation, just won't let go.

I am always being told that my standards are pretty low - particularly by my children. This must be another example of this because I just can't see the almost universal beating that Jablonsky seems to be being given.

"But then that's what makes this such an interesting pursuit, film music: everyone's opinions are different."

  6. My review of Pain and Gain: http://tracksounds.com/reviews/pain_gai … lonsky.htm

Seems like I've come down somewhere in the middle between Thor and James' opinions on this one. I really ought to get myself a stress ball with the word "STEAMBOY" written across it, though.

I'm kinder on Jablonsky than most and I absolutely hated Battleship. If ever there was one score that single-handedly summed up all that is heinous about Remote Control without bothering with any of its redeeming qualities, that would be it.
  8. My review of ENDER'S GAME, for anyone who is interested:

Edmund I actually like Battleship somewhat more than Ender's Game. Its a fun popcorn score in the vein of its big brother Armageddon (which Jablonsky actually did quite a bit of work on) and of course the Transformers scores. The themes are entertaining, the ostinatos are a bit more powerful and less aggravating than normal, and I really like the little motif for the aliens, its quite menacing and primal.

  9. Even by Jablonsky's standards the themes in Battleship are just aggravatingly simplistic. "The Art of War" is pretty much the only halfway decent cue in that score, and even that theme just goes up an octave and then back down an octave. Then there's the "anthem" which is the lamest Narnia knockoff ever, and the "music" for the aliens is sound design of the absolute worst kind, absolutely headache-inducing. The rest is more or less just endless Inception foghorns, which is an irritating device at the best of times.

I didn't actually think it had much to do with Armageddon or Transformers. With those, the themes were at the front and center...actual, proper, reasonably long-lined themes. In Battleship I feel like the sole purpose of the score was to generate as much brute noise as possible, with very little in it that pushed my "fun popcorn score" buttons.

Ender's Game has a better theme at least in "Ender's War" and is more dull than obnoxious, but is also a far cry from even the Transformers scores, let alone something like Steamboy.

No score album for the new Transformers movie? I was hoping we might get back to the guilty pleasure of the original score...but more likely it's so grungy and athematic that they won't even bother to put it out there...

In a recent interview, Steve mentioned that the score is very melodic in parts, especially for some of the action sequences.
