One of my favourite composers cool

  1. I just rediscovered his Exodus; what a great piece of work. But my personal favourites are Portrait of a Lady and König der letzten Tage (as it was called here, you might know it as "King of last days"?).

Pan Tasdeusz is one of my all time faves. My dad liked that score so much (I gave him a copy for his birthday), he even watched the film, and he never watches anything with subtitles.

His concert works are fabulous, just as good and accessable as his film scores!

I look forward to any work by Kilar whether it's film or otherwise. cool

  2. He's not into scoring so much anymore. I mean, he will rather score the new Krzysztof Zanussi film, but he rather backs off.

    That is not good news.

'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn
  3. Well, he might be somewhere near Barry's age. And anyway, Kilar never thought highly of film scores at the first place. As most of acclaimed concert composers. Krzysztof Penderecki is EXTREMELY negative about film work, actually. Even if he did some in the 50s/60s
http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website
  4. I understand why concert composers would think that way. Film can very rarely be about a composer's decision-making process the way a concert commission is.

What really bugs me is those more "serious" composers who frequently slate film music, yet frequently write it. Michael Nyman, I'm thinking of you. If it's so demeaning and free of quality, don't do it.
  5. But my dear James, you forget one of the reasons composers have to write music, and film music. It pays. wink

And it's interesting that Nyman doesn't do it so often anymore. It's mostly French films where composers get more of a chance to write music that the film makers will edit to. (Especially since that double fiasco with PRACTICAL MAGIC and THE HOURS, which apparently soured him - he hasn't done an American film since.) His music probably has enough life of its own for him to rest on concert commissions and income from tours except when he really feels like it.

I would refer them all to an acclaimed and "serious" giant of 20th century music, Ralph Vaughan Williams who never 'talked down' the subject of writing for film and once quoted it as ( slight mis-quote here perhaps ) "having possibilities the likes of Wagner could only dream".

    Good man.
    GOOD man.

I'm always slightly disappointed to hear composers slag off their own work as a "mere" meal ticket, as if one has no right to be proud of such lowly considerations.

My work -as most anyone's- work isn't high art, but when I do something particularly well, you bet your arse I'm happy and proud. No, I'm not saving lives. No, I haven't created something that will be the paradigm of the ages.
Not everything can and should be.

But that doesn't make it any less worthwhile.

Indeed. Film music offers so many vast possibilities and it often delivers outstanding works of pure quality. Being a snob might sometimes, also function as an excuse why nobody wants to hire you.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  6. They slag it off as pure check-paying thing. They have to live, so they write film music, which is not art. Regarding film music Kilar is one who admits to not caring much for it.
http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website
  7. Damn shame Kilar thinks like that... If something can touch you on a personal level, or you just can enjoy it over and over again, that's called art in my book. Especially something created out of nothing like film music. OK if he doesn't care about it, but to call it not having any artistic value is wrong.

Which probably refers to the fact that he doesn't look to it for inspiration. A lot of the more classically-inclined composers don't find other film music very interesting. For example Yared claims that he looks for his inspiration in Richard Strauss, Bach, Ravel and Bartok. When he's asked whether he looks to the example of other film composers, he finds that notion strange. I suppose that's fair enough - it's probably one of the reasons a lot of these composers who double as concert hall composers, Corigliano, Nyman, Kilar, Williams, Goldenthal, Gordon, Iglesias, all have such distinct compositional voices. You don't mistake them for imitation Williams / Horner / Goldsmith / Zimmer, that's for sure.

Hey Katiek, My personal fav is also Pan Tadeusz. And same story here... My parents just adore this soundtrack. Very well done! I also like his Exodus ( which has been used in the trailer of Schindlers' List... and if you listen closely was the temp track to 'Schindler's Workforce'! )

Further more, I don't think that every "serious" composers dislikes filmscores. And if they're being negative about it i'm SURE it's because of the experiences they had. They don't have the elephantskin filmcomposers must have. What if months of hard labour get's slaughtered in the editing room, or what if you where replaced by another composer because he sells more albums ( The Troy Story right? ). Let's not forget these are creating artists that are very emotional if it's about their own works. So I don't think it's all about the mealticket, it's just about trying things and dislike them afterworths.

grtz, Jojo hears a who! biggrin

Agreed. Labels like Pomation have release compilations including selections from a lot of Polish scores. Unfortunately the case with many of these is that no full score releases exists. And most released are hard to get. Take Zycie za zycie for example... It's one of his most stunning scores, but the easiest release to get includes only a selection and some classical works.

My ratings are based on a full score release or from having seen the film. I could of course rate all other scores based on those few cues from various compilations, but that wouldn't be fair, right?
