As an intro to the 35th Filmfestival of Ghent in October, there'll be a free film music concert on July 21 (Belgium National Day) at the Gentse Feesten (10 days of Festivities in Ghent).

Dirk Brossé is conducting the Flemish Radio Orchestra and Brussels Philharmonic, bringing music from The Generals (Jerry Goldsmith), Shrek (Harry Gregson-Williams), Ice Age (John Powell), Daens (Dirk Brossé), The Bone Collector (Craig Armstrong), World Trade Center (Craig Armstrong), Love Actually (Craig Armstrong), Shakespeare in Love (Stephen Warbeck), Pan Tadeusz (Wojciech Kilar), Little Miss Sunshine (Mychael Danna), Being Julia (Mychael Danna), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (John Powell), La Vita e bella (Nicola Piovani), Harry Potter (John Williams), Casino Royale (David Arnold) en Indiana Jones (John Williams).

Sweet! Most of the selections I already heard, but it'll be cool to see and hear how it sounds in an other environment, in the middle of Ghent, between two cathedrals. cool

That sounds like a very good program. Accessible for the general public with the like of Potter and Indiana Jones , some entertaining score like Little Miss Sunshine and Mr. and Ms. Smith and some more serious and romantic ones.

No... it was just a rant. Sorry.

Besides, even if the composers were there to meet, I wouldn't do it anyway, so I'm not really sure why I suddenly got so angry.

Maybe it was that interview I read yesterday that made me realize that for musicians and composers making music is their passion and the fans are just some sort of 'side effect'. That's how it made me feel anyway...

Haha, didn't meant that. Rants are good!

I sent a link of this thread to someone of the Filmfestival. I hope they do something with it!

That is I guess a understandable reaction somehow, but sad to hear. I think they prefer to talk with other composers instead of fans? But events like Soncinemad, Ghent and Udeba proove the opposite? (well, not when we're pushed outside wink )

  1. From what I've seen, it is a very tiring job to do a 90-minute concert. Both mentally and physically. So I can understand that some composers would want to just relax afterwards and try to come down from the adrenaline high of the performance.

I wonder though if they realise how important for the audience to have the opportunity to meet the composers they admire so much. It's probably the only chance that they will be able to meet with them.

I do remember going backstage after Joel McNeely conducted a concert of Bernard Herrmann's music at the Barbican in London. There was definitely some sort of "gathering" happening after that, with many guests present - including family, friends and other composers (such as David Arnold). But McNeely seemed very happy to answer a few questions I had for him and for him to sign my Varese Psycho re-recording cover.

But, maybe the organisers try to control the composers too much. They do have a balancing act, trying to please the composers as well as trying to keep everything to time, etc.

I think so yes. We had that with Armstrong 2 years ago. We waited 3 quarters outside for him, but he was somehow pushed in his car. Lucky he saw us and took the time to sign and say a short hello! They shouldn't protect them so muc, we were with 3 people and not evil at all. wink

But mind that the composers walk around before the concert and during the intermission, without "protection" of the organisation. Also in the morning there was the conference with a Q&A and signing sessions. But not everybody could be there ofcourse. What it comes down too, is that in 2007 it was so different from previous years. That was just the shock and wrong as well.

  2. But are there people who are at the concert who were not at the earlier "events"?

I remember that this was one of the problems with the Silvestri concert last year in Madrid. The concert was open to everyone and so there were people who were in the audience for this who hadn't been at the signing session. As they were only at the concert there was an expectation for signings at that event.

    Yes indeed.

But if you were quick enough, you could say a short hello and get a signature during the intermission and just before the event. At the entrance.

But yeah, it sucked that it was only during these moments.

Oh yes. At Ubeda last year, when Powell showed up during in between Rob Townson's talk and Richard Kraft's one, I started chatting to him and some one came up and asked if he would sign a cover. Another person who was standing near by (one of the organisers) actually said to this guy "sorry, you can't get anything signed until Sunday". There were blank faces all around. rolleyes

Also at the last WSA it felt like the composers were being kept away from the fans. I admire Clint Mansell for coming out for some photos and a chat, although I must admit I started looking for Bregt instead, but discovered David Arnold down a corridor so I started talking with him.

    ...then I found Bregt. tongue

To me, that goes against the feel that I think these meetings should be promoting. It should be ideally be an open interaction between composers and fans. At least ask the composer if he wants to sign something.

Was it during the break? 'Cause then you would've probably discovered Bregt and Clint at the same place biggrin
  4. Sad news, I contacted Tommy Pearson (the man who was responsible for the English presentation on many concerts and WSA's), I asked if he was looking forward to the many concerts the Filmfestival of Gent was gonna present and this was his answer:

Thank you for your kind word Thomas, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately the organisers have decided not to use me as concert host this year - apparently it has something to do with a new media deal which means they will be using a host from the media company. I can't really tell you any more than that. I have not received ANY more details than that!

I will miss it very much, particularly all my friends in the audience and at Den Turk that I have got to know over the years.

But I'm sure the festival will still be fun. I won't be there, but I'm sure I will hear all about it from everyone!

    best
    Tommy

So sad, he remains a terrifc connaisseur of film music, a warm host and a man who could perfectly interview any composer on the stage, I will miss his warm voice immensely this year. sad
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  5. Could be bad news indeed...a "media company" is taking control and throwing it's weight around?

Well, never change a winning formula. And that's what happened last year! For years now the filmfestival in Ghent was unique because of the relaxed atmosphere. But now, all of the sudden they changed it! That the composers need a break afterworths is understandable. (although in 80% it's Dirk Brossé conducting while the composer sits down and relax ). So that's not the issue here.

Furthermore, the composers didn't had a break because everybody that got invited by sponsors could walk freely amongst them, in a seperate room of course. I think that's not right. People that pay good money are thrown out and people that come for free can have free champagn and the lot! Not to mention that the invities don't give a rat's ass about filmmusic, but hey it's for free. Shamefull indeed! But even besides that; It's just CRAZY and NOT DONE to organize an event that runs over 3 hours without offering any drinks!!!!! I understand that It's very expensive - like the past years - to offer this for free. So, let people pay for their drinks but make sure there's that option!!

    I'll drink to that! beer

yeah, it was a real bummer last year, all those snobs who couldn't even whistle Star Wars were there, and we big fans were send home. Hopefully this year it will be different, and if that's not the case, I will explain it to them loud and effective what I think of it

Darn, it's hard to make a choice... Not because there are so many great ones, but because there's no score that really did it, that really made that impact to become 'best score of the year'. crazy

There are some runner ups, one of these will be 'the one' for me to vote:

Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood
Osvaldo Golijov - Youth Without Youth
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The last one is probably too much influenced by the film, though...
