The fact that we didn't have a thread devoted to this fine, much underrated composer is just mirroring the sad truth: David Newman doesn't get to score that many big films...

Here is, at least, a new film... yet another comedy:

Comedy? Why is it always comedy? Is it easier to do, cheaper to do, or what?
  1. I'd like to see him do something big like "Serenity", but with the themes and power of his "Bill & Ted 1" score.

'Cause nobody pays attention to this kind of films, especially their score.

When you get the musically big projects, the epics, the war films, the action and the super-hero stuff, the comic adaptations and the large thrillers, you always turn to the true talents of someone like Ramin Djawadi, Bt, the RZA or Tyler Bates, just to name a few.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Demetris, you conveniently left out John Williams, Patrick Doyle and other composers who also get the big projects and not just the composers who are from the RC arm and/or trying to ape the RC sound.

But to be truthful, Newman's comedy scores can be good. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey has some quite impressive cues ("Heaven" and "Meeting Your Fears" for example), and Throw Momma from the Train is pretty good too. It's just non-comedic stuff like The Phantom, Serenity and Anastasia that sadly get overlooked.

Nothing to do with the directors choice then?

Not always. Unless your name is like Steven Spielberg, to name one. Producers don't trust middle-to-upper class directors (I mean quality, not social biggrin ). Giving it a name like RZA, Djawadi or, say, Bates, gives them security that the music is what THEY like it to be.

I guess the biggest case in point here is Bruckheimer, who tolerates only Zimmer or Rabin and, in some situations, Harry Gregson-Williams (though him mostly with Tony Scott) and even goes as far as rejecting a composer working on a score, just because he hates woodwinds (Silvestri on Pirates of the Caribbean) and going with his comfort zone.

There is some history with directors having to temporarily leave their composer of choice, because producers don't trust the composer. David Cronenberg couldn't work with Howard Shore on The Dead Zone, because he wasn't big enough of a name yet and they told the director to work with much more trusted and popular composer like Michael Kamen.

Someone was obviously a fan of his The Phantom score? ( a BRILLIANT score by the way )

Good choice IMO and I'll greatly look forward to this.

Wow... I had the Phantom score on my shelf for more than 3 years or so, I today I gave it a spin (first time)... its a pleasant suprise, good old fashioned orchestral adventure score.. NICE! Stupid of me that I never listened to it, while I have Galaxy Quest as well, which I like quite a bit. (love the movie too)

Give THE PHANTOM a few more spins, it's just such a damn fine superhero / adventure score, one of the best of it's ilk IMO and a real shame Newman wasn't hired for more of te same.

300 was a crapfest in my eyes.

I did like Sin City, though. TS looks like an extension of that style, so I'll check it out.

I remember seeing the film in the 90's, but I don't remember much of the contents and definitely not anything of the music. But from the clips, this looks like a very fun score! I would have picked it up under normal circumstances.
    I am extremely serious.

I haven't picked up any of Intrada's David Newman releases (apart from a download, at a considerably lower price, of Throw Mamma From the Train). Anyone able to provide any decent comments on this to make me change my policy? He's just not a composer who I feel is consistently interesting enough to make me buy one of his scores without knowing anything about it - but his better stuff is very entertaining.
  7. Jingle all the way has the bad Newman sound (his crazy energy and total out of control comedy music) and the good Newman quality, an amazing theme. Plus Intrada is right in saying the final 2 tracks are some of the best Newman has written yet. I'd say 3 stars and a possible 3 and a half

    I already ordered it smile
