I'm just amazed he hasn't been replaced by Junkyard XL.

ah yes, sounds just like the way I wanted it (and immediately the theme is noticeable and memorable). Will make the film a lot more fun too I reckon punk

I can't help thinking that Powell has been shoehorned in to give a "Pirates" sound. ( Did Marianelli record anything? )

The two tracks sound competent ( as you'd expect from Powell ) but I'm not excited.

  4. I'm a little sad that Powell doesn't seem to be "being himself" (apparently - haven't heard the samples and not going to), but I have to admit that the fanboy in me of both Powell and Pirates is super curious to hear what the two combined will sound like. lick

What gave you that idea? If anything, this sounds like early-Powell.

I was going off of what people were saying, which made it sound like that.

Excellent interview! Here is a composer who actually writes good tunes, who doesn't exaggerate or act like he is the center of innovation in Hollywood. Kudos to the man for being humble and honest.

Curious what that rejected tune he said he crafted for Chicken Run and Shrek, which he says he's been using in all DWA films since then, is.

I've watched half of it, the "you know" was getting on my wick.

I like his honesty, a good candid interview. I'll watch the rest later, you know, when I have the time.

The only ones I don't have are The Lorax, Face/Off and (oddly) Shrek, and the track from Rio 2 that isn't on the score album. I definitely used to own Shrek so don't know where that's gone.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
  9. No problem! Happy listening. smile

Oh, and do check out that "Bola Viva" track from Rio 2 on YouTube or something. It's a gem.

  10. Yeah, just came over here to post myself. sad

I wonder how long Melinda has been sick for. 41 is no goddamn age, and if it was something that's been brewing for several years now...well, it certainly throws John's many "spend more time with my son/family" comments of late into an entirely new light. Not to mention my own selfish comments expressing frustration at that choice. sad

And to have it happen on the same night of A Prussian Requiem premiering? That's just cruel. This should have been one of the happiest days of John's life and now it's the worst.

My heart goes out to him and to Oliver. And, of course, RIP Melinda. You were doubtless the muse for some mighty fine music over the years!

Yikes, that's terrible news. I had no idea Powell's wife was sick (nor had anyone else, I guess). As Edmund says, it certainly puts his life choices in the last couple of years in a whole other perspective.

I'm reminded of John Williams' first wife, Barbara Ruick, who died suddenly one month before the world premiere of Williams and Spielberg's first collaboration, THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, in 1974 -- a very busy period in the composer's life. It's strange to counter the vivacity of creative activities with the crushing realities of real-life tragedies like this.

My thoughts are with John Powell and his family.
    I am extremely serious.
