I absolutely adore the Prelude to War piano version. I was listening to it again today with Thomas and he pointed out to post it here. So here it goes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEhlAA85_tY

The MT members in Ubeda decided to give McCreary a MainTitles kazoo and make him honorary member for this festival. We will do this every time (last year was Lennertz) for a festival.

Here's a video of the moment (first video, starts around 0:52 seconds) where we hand over the kazoo:

Page also includes his trip report of Ubeda ad Spain.

    listen to more classical music!
  3. Somebody said at FSM Bear said on his blog he was signed to score a superhero film, but didn't say which. So I hunted for a list of 2011/2012 superhero films, and the following -- assuming he isn't replacing somebody on a film -- are films with no announced composer:

    "Dredd"
    "Man of Steel"
    "Deadpool"
    "Ant-Man"
    "Hancock 2"
"Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall"
    "Wanted 2"
    "Doctor Strange"
    "Iron Fist"
    "Nick Fury"
    "Silver Surfer"
    "Sub-Mariner"
    "Thundercats"
    "X-Men Origins: Magneto"

    EDIT: I forgot "The Avengers"

    I hope he does too!

Bear would be an interesting choice though, a real chance at the big time and I'm sure he'd go all out to deliver.

  5. Another score site is listing him for "Man of Steel" -- so I guess that's the superhero film.

even though Serenity and The Spirit weren't that good, I also would like David Newman on The Avengers, if solely to hope he repeats his Phantom magic

I asked Bear himself on his forum, and he just officially denied it.

  10. Okay, so we're narrowing it down then; removing:

    "Dredd"
Since it's in production trouble and if they are probably going to get a new composer, if they even have one now.

    "Man of Steel"

    Since he just denied it.

    "Deadpool"
I believe that's in limbo at the moment.

    "Doctor Strange"
Romured to be J.N.H. for this.

    "The Avengers"
Silvestri is supposed to have it, as reported by attendies of the recent event where reportedly his wife said so.

    "Hancock 2"
Same director, so Powell should get the job; not until 2013, so too early for even him to announce.

    "Ant-Man"
Isn't until 2014, and David Arnold could get that, having scored "Hot Fuzz" for the director.

    "Nick Fury"
    Still too far off.

    "Iron Fist"
Doesn't even have a dictor, or cast yet.

    "Sub-Mariner"
    Still being developed.

    "Wanted 2"
Apparently hasn't even been written yet.

"Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall"
Developement heck, as far as I can tell.

    "X-Men Origins: Magneto"
    No script, no director.

New Spider-Man is going to Horner.

So, that would mean one of these two:

    "Silver Surfer"
    "Thundercats"

SS is a "go", but that's all I know -- didn't look any further.

"Thunderctas" is the only film that has actually started work, as of earlier this year. Unless I missed a film, this is the only one it could be.

  11. I've just added my comments of Bear McCreary's score for Chillerama: Zom-B Movie:

I'd be interested to hear peoples' comments on what they think of my review of a score I don't really like!

    Alan,

I can't comment on the content of your review as I haven't found the time to listen to the score myself, and I'm definitely not a person who is a fan of the genre myself, so I might be in the same boat as you.

I can tell you that I find the review very respectfull. You point out the strengths and weaknesses as you perceive them as a biased listener, but allow other people equally biased people (biassed but maybe in a different direction) to disagree with you.
Even better, you encourage people to form their own opinion.

In short, I can't (yet) grade Bear's score, but I can grade your review: Full marks, five stars, 10/10...

I am mindful of the large number of keen McCreary fans that are out there (including yourself). The last thing I wanted to do was to force my own opinion on people or to just say that it is "crap". I didn't think that I did do that but it is nice to hear that I succeeded in my intention.

Bear read your review and commented on it on his forum.
You might want to read it here:

or for those who don't want to go and read it on the forum: here is his reply

The first review of my score is up. It's one of the most entertaining reviews of my albums ever! Some truly stand out quotes, but this is my favorite:

"“Hate” is a strong word that I prefer not to use, but there are parts of this score that I detest intensely"

I figured a score with this much personality would pick up some detractors. Funny, too, because the reviewer seems to recognize the reasoning behind every creative decision I made... he just hates the music I'm inspired from.

I'm really curious to see what you guys think of this score!

Recognizing somebody else's strength doesn't diminish your own (Joss Whedon)
  16. You know, I've heard scores with "personality" that I didn't hate, or detest. I hope McCreary has other measuring sticks than that.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  17. I am disappointed that he has really painted my review as some sort of vitriolic tirade against his score and has then gone on to presume my own musical preferences.

Oh well. There are some excellent tracks contained on the album but then who wants to concentrate on the positive when there's something negative to focus on.

I was surprised that there was little interest from the composer's enthusiastic followers when the review link went up on Facebook. Maybe now that McCreary has spoken and set his stall out maybe there will be some more interest.
