I have now listened to all albums from E.S. Posthumus and bought/downloaded them all from Amazon. They are all great. Still from the Cartographer I prefer the Piri Reis version, I think I am in Posthumus fever! Fantastic!

The music is brilliant though, here without vocals: which I prefer!

I wanted to ask about cloud atlas trailer, if somebody can help me identify the music used in them.

I found the following info on google:

The two steps from hell guy Michael bergersen (if I got it right) - "sonera"

    M83: outro

Both of those are in the trailers, but what about the beautiful piano theme that opens the trailers, especially the long version of the first one? Some sources still suggest it is sonera but sonera is the ostinati-driven and choir piece of the middle of the trailer...thanks
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

There's a topic over at FSM where "Cloud Atlas Sextet — Original Film Score" is listed alongside the two other pieces you mentioned. But that's as much as I know.

  1. In the 5 minute CLOUD ATLAS trailer, you can hear the film's main theme for piano*, then piano and strings... and then eventually it switches to M83's 'Outro' from the album 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming'.

    * A Zimmerish fast-paced piece featuring this simple melody can also be heard here: http://cloudatlas.warnerbros.com/

I really like "Outro." I'd never heard it before seeing the trailer. I applaud whoever put the trailer together for a brilliant choice of music. The last minute of that trailer is pure awesomeness and would never have been so impressive without that inspiring piece of music.

Edit: I've done some listening to that album, HURRY UP, WE'RE DREAMING and I thought, "Someone should get M83 a film to score. They could do something like Daft Punk did on TRON." And then stumbled upon the news that Anthony Gonzalez of M83 will be scoring the upcoming Tom Cruise Sci-Fi OBLIVION, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski (who also directed TRON). Funny old world. This is probably not news to some of you, but I'm really excited to see what Gonzalez can do with a big budget sci-fi film.
  2. I've been listening to Outro a fair bit too. I'm not so sure about all of the rest of the album, but the guy has definite ability.

Yeah m83 are really impressive and I just discovered them too because of the trailer.

Michael, you are saying that the piano smooth theme is actually from the score of the movie by Tykwer, Heil and Klimek? That's wonderful !
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. It is from the movie score.
I don't believe for a moment that it was written by a composer from the 1920s (which is meant to be the source in the novel), but that is the core material of the Cloud Atlas Sextet.

It's definitely nice, but I just think it's a bit sad someone wrote a book that specifically speaks to a certain era of music and that's pretty much been dumped completely for a modern style that the composers were actually capable of.

NP : Phenomena - Audiomachine (Composed by Paul Dinletir)

If you like trailermusic that's powerful and dynamic and sometimes melancholic and lyrical then this album is
for you ! The album features mainly traditional orchestra and choir , ferocious drums and ethereal female voices .
    I personally love it ...

Here's a track of the album if you wanna give it a listen ... wink

For those interested.... Audiomachine have released their cue for the "300 Rise..." trailer. It's on iTunes (and probably elsewhere). The single actually contains 2 tracks of approx 3'30" each and it's FECKING EPIC!! punk

Edit: should probably mention it's called "Blood and Stone".

Two Steps From Hell: Volume 1 (2006)

If you like epic trailer music then you have to listen to Two Steps From Hell !
    Play it LOUD ! punk
"Simplicity is the key to brilliance"
  11. Strewth, the man speaks sense. beer

Volume 1 is perhaps not the first album I'd recommend to a Two Steps initiate, given that it's still quite "green" and unrefined in places and falls back on "temp tracks"/cliches more frequently than their later stuff tends to. But there's also something appealing about the huge variety of styles; not just "epic trailer music" in the Zimmer vein but also some horror, adventure, ethnic stuff, proper orchestral action ("Battle of Light and Darkness" and "Interceptors Duel" are both excellent John Williams pastiches), sweeping melodic pieces (I'm particularly fond of "Undying Faith"), thriller material...anyone who says all trailer music sounds the same has clearly not heard this collection!
