I´m much better now, I can move on punk

Zimmer at his all time best!

    -Erik-

Well I´d say among his best, but let´s not start a Zimmer fight in every topic wink tongue

Not sure what you were reading into what I was saying but I honestly think that Backdraft is Zimmer at his all time best. It is his best score... hands down! I love it!

    -Erik-

Yes I know, not the first time you say it, there was no joke in my post wink

Aha! Now I see what you were getting at. wink What's your favorite Zimmer score?

NP : OUTLAND - Jerry Goldsmith

Underrated IMO, or at least rarely talked about!?

Isn't it odd how you remember certain days in your life? I remember the ( now long gone ) record store I picked this one up in because I also picked up RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK at the same time on a lovely sunny day in 1981 shocked

I remember going to a record store in Rye once, also on a sunny day and also probably long gone (a proper oldy worldy style record store, looked like something out of Harry Potter if you can believe that!). First of all it was a great day, and second of all I picked up Balto, Star Trek II and Lost In Space and listened to them in the car on the journey back. They have since remained 3 of my favourite scores of all time! So not only are they great scores, I also partly associate them with that day - you just don't get that when you buy online or download.

Was that from the soundtrack shop in Rye?

Yep. Is it still going do you know?

BACKTRACK isn't it!? It was still going last year when I enquired after an item. I only ever dealt with them by phone & post.

p.s. 3 top class scores for a journey cool beer

That´s a DAMN difficult question, but it would be between The Thin Red Line, The Prince of Egypt and The Da Vinci Code. Pirates 3, Gladiator and The Peacemaker could make it to the top three anyday though tongue

Very true. I will be honest, I skipped over this score to get to Capricorn One. Sadly, I can't tell you much about Outland. I guess I should give it a spin.

    -Erik-

It's never going to be a score that's right up there with Goldsmith's great canon of work Erik but it's a thoroughly worthwhile effort featuring a wonderfully ominous main title a gentle love theme and best of all one of JG's most corking action tracks 'Hot Water', a monstrous piece of unfettered fury!

p.s. I believe there was talk that JG didn't solely write 'Hot Water' but I can't remember the exact details!?

Wow! WOW! and WOW! What a great day of shopping and what a magnificent way to hear those scores for the first time.

I remember back to my days of only being able to choose 2 maybe 3 scores to buy every two or three weeks. And at a time when I only had about 60 CD's everything in the shop looked great. There were days where I would pick up POLTERGEIST, THE FURY and DRACULA in one day. And being a novice film music fan I didn't really knowing how amazing those scores were and how high on the pedestal I would eventually hold them.

Solid list. I'd personally get rid of The Peacemaker... never got into that one... and replace it with a small scale Zimmer effort like Rain Man or An Everlasting Piece.

PS - Okay, can someone slap me. I'm discussing Zimmer scores. This guy never goes away.

There´s some kind of magic when you first discover/listen a score that with the coming years becomes one of your favs....too bad that feeling happens only once.

I simply can´t with older Zimmer stuff. It´s so simple and primitive....I´d choose The Holiday for this kinda comedy/drama score.

Me neither, usually. But REGARDING HENRY is very nostalgic, innocent, melodic, i love it.

Me too. Although enjoyable, i think BADELT'S Rescue Dawn is a HUGE improvement of that sound. And James Horner's Beyond Borders too.

    NP: Wanted - Danny Elfman

What an odd project for Elfman to sign on to. This is definitely something different for him. This is my first listen but "Success Montage" is pretty interesting. Elfman's trademark electronics over top of the orchestra (drowning them out unfortunately) and the cello solo of the film main title song. Pretty creative stuff. I've been reading at the other boards that this is one of Elfman's best in recent years so I'm going into this with some expectation. Let' see where this leads me...

It's certainly very interesting and well-worked, especially the fugue-esque main theme but Elfman's best in recent years? Nah, i think it's far-stretched. I'd take S.O.P over this any day.

    James Horner - Balto

Revisiting an old friend. Wonderful orchestrations and thematic material. Some of the best animation music I've ever heard. Rumors have it that Don Davis did some ghostwriting or not?

One of my favourite scores, and very underrated on this forum. It wouldn't surprise me if Davis did write some music for this score, certainly the orchestrations he did has his signature style all over it. I do remember reading once that Davis said he learnt a lot from Horner, so maybe it was Horner who helped him develop that sound in the first place? Either way, this is a brilliant score.

This is one of my favorite scores. It has an emotional depth that many other animated scores don't have. Of course great scores like The Lion King also have it.

    CARTER BURWELL - three kings

Take BlackHawk Down, Newman's Jarhead and the usual Burwell frantically genius craziness and throw it in the mixer. What you get is a very intense and original listen that will most probably sound as noise to anyone who hasn't watched the movie and / or is not a Burwell follower.

I'll have to give S.O.P. another spin but to me it just doesn't sound like Elfman. It's Elfman channeling Glass. And if someone had said Glass composed it I wouldn't think any differently. I don't mind composers switching it up a bit but not in this way.

Yeah, i'll admit it's TOO Glass-y. But Wanted - a score which at parts sounds too modern or even too RC - in a sideling kind of way, still has that Glass sound in it as well, but in way smaller doses of course.

I'd say that Elfman is very influenced by Glass lately.

Still, S.O.P is a very advanced and well-worked composition.

All true. I'm in the middle portions of Wanted and I thought I needed to give my ears a good cleaning to hear what I thought was RC stuff.

As for S.O.P.... yes, very well done but... well, you know.
