Anyway I'm off to back-up my stuff before volcanic ash decides to fry my drives. wave

Anybody here willing to back me up with this line of thought?

Nuts??? I don't think so, this is Maintitles. beer

And Bregt, what's your stance on backing up meaningless off-topic posts on legitimate topics found on worldfamous message boards? cheesy

  3. I've a question about googleupdate.exe.

I want to stop it checking for updates automatically and would prefer to choose when to do it.

I've disabled all googleupdate entries in the "Scheduled Tasks" in the Control Panel but I'm still finding that it's running. Do I have to into all my Google applications and go a-hunting for all the boxes to check/uncheck to stop the updater?

Currently use Google Chrome, Picasa & Google Earth.

    Really?

I find that applications such as Chrome, Google Earth & Picasa to be really useful. I'm sure that if I knew that I'd installed an application that would update itself without asking in the background and would then re-install itself if I disabled it, I would delete it because of the similarities to a viral infection.

But they are useful and the updater program running in the background is useful for keeping the applications up to date - if I had a PC of reasonable specification I probably would not notice the resource hogness of the googleupdate.exe

What symbol is Bregt talking about when he talks about using the anchor to post a clip on M.T.

You can find the clip here:

  6. I have a question...

Recently when I've been booting my PC I've started getting the following message:

    invalid boot.ini file
    booting from c:windows

The PC then boots as normal (apparently).

My first question is: if this (error) message is appearing and the PC boot normally do I actually need to fix it?

I've done some hunting around the PC and I have been unable to find a "boot.ini" file (I have changed setting to view hidden files and folders). But I have found a "boot.ini.backup" file in c:windowspss.

Opening this file in notepad tells me the following:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Doing a search on the net I see a "default example" that's the same as above except I seem to have the final " /NoExecute=OptIn" bit.

So, do I need to fix anything? And if I do, can I just delete the extra bit I seem to have and copy the resultant file to c: and rename it just "boot.ini"?

I'm worried that if I do anything to try and fix it then I'll make matters worse (i.e., may not be able to boot at all) rather than just leaving an irritating error message that doesn't seem to be a problem needing fixing.

    Cheers!

It seems that you're windows installation got somehow corrupted. Do you run xp?
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  7. Yes I do.

Again, if my PC's loading normally - as it seems to be - and the only outward sign I see is the error message as the PC is firing up then I'm reluctant to do anything.

One plan for sorting it out would be to just copy the "boot.ini.backup" from the current folder it is in back to the root c: folder and rename it back to "boot.ini" My PC doesn't do anything fancy when I start it up so I don't really need any of the special instructions a tailored boot.ini would contain for someone who has set their PC up in a special way.

BTW, the "boot.ini" tab has disappeared from the System Configuration Utility when I run msconfig. I'm assuming that this is related to the missing boot.ini file in the c: folder?

As an aside, the other day my PC froze when I was moving files to a memory stick. I Could the boot.ini file have been corrupted when I used Sysinternal's process explorer to shut down the PC?

No, google it and see what people suggests, otherwise log into windows, pop your cd in, start windows installation and choose the option 'upgrade' installation if available. With later version of windows it's that easy, it re-installs and corrects all windows-related errors without changing the slightest thing in your pc but i don't remember if it can be done with xp. Firstly backup and try booting from the cd and repair installation?

Your windows installation is corrupted, most possibly from a virus it seems.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  8. I don't have a CD as XP was already pre-installed.

My anti-virus software is up-to-date. A scan using Malwarebytes' anti-malware showed no suspicious hits and Avira's AntiVir also showed no problems with a full scan. AntiVir's "AntiVir Guard" - which contunuously monitors all file access attempts - hasn't alerted me to anything. So I'm pretty sure that it's not a virus problem.

Alan, just copy that backup file to your root drive (C:) and rename it to boot.ini.
That should get rid of the message.

However the question remains how your boot.ini could just disappear.
I suggest a full sweep with your virus scanner (as thoroughly as possible).

If that comes up with nothing, it's likely a fluke.

EDIT: Ah, i see you've done a virus check already. In that case I'd be happy to chalk it up to gremlins.

I wouldn't be so sure, i have seen a lot of computer with xp installed and antivirus that shows nothing, still the pc has a virus. Xp has a huge hole with some specific virus that can go on undedected by most av software and if you change to someone that can actually detect those, usually ESET NOD 32 which i DON'T RECOMMEND, it will detect your whole system32 folder as virus infected and will delete most crucial for windows .dll's in there and BAM! no can boot again; if you want a windows xp cd you can easily find one wink or pm me.

  9. If it is a virus that's difficult to detect are there any other tell-tale signs of infection?

But Martijn, would you know what the "/NoExecute=OptIn" part of the boot.ini.backup file means? I've seen example boot.ini files that have the same format as the copy I seem to have except these example versions end at "fastdetect"

  11. I have a question about the "/NoExecute=Opin" entry in the backup boot.ini file.

Looking at the following page - http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/bootini.htm - I see the following:

"The security updates in service pack 2 for Windows XP included the addition of capability for DEP (Data Execution Prevention). DEP configuration for the system is controlled through switches in the boot.ini file. Some features of DEP are turned on by default with a boot.ini switch "/NoExecute=OptIn"."

What's DEP? It looks like the inclusion of this entry in the boot.ini file is a valid entry?

I can answer my own question:

"Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help prevent malicious code from running on a system. In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, DEP is enforced by hardware and by software.

The primary benefit of DEP is to help prevent code execution from data pages. Typically, code is not executed from the default heap and the stack. Hardware-enforced DEP detects code that is running from these locations and raises an exception when execution occurs. Software-enforced DEP can help prevent malicious code from taking advantage of exception-handling mechanisms in Windows.

  12. I've copied the boot.ini.backup file (after an Old Speckled Hen and an Innis & Gunn!) and copied it to c: and renamed it as boot.ini.

On rebooting error message is gone and boot.ini tab has returned to the System Configuration Utility window.

This seems to have done the trick but I'll keep an eye on the PC to see if there's anything suspicious happening.

    Thanks all to helped.

  14. I'm looking to upgrade the family computer and I'm looking for advice.

I'm looking to buy a family desktop PC for around £400 that's going to be used for general/office use (no gaming or streaming video). Probably just a base unit as I have a relatively new monitor (a Samsung SyncMaster 931BW).

As far as specification goes is this a reasonable piece of kit for my needs? http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspir … tech-specs

I'm hoping to set up a wireless network and plan to have the new PC (hardwired into the router?) and a new laptop (wireless) plus Wii connected wirelessly and use this for a couple of WiFi-enabled mobile phones. Maybe a router such as the Netgear N WNR2000?

As far as a laptop is concerned, maybe something like a Toshiba Satellite C650D-12J?

Maybe the brands are not to everyone's tastes, but do the specifications seem okay?
