Look at the Western Digital Passport drives.

Thanks. Just looked up Amazon and found these there. Looking at getting a couple of 1TB drives for music access.

They are excellent and extremely cheap. I own two, very recommended.
  2. Does anyone use Dropbox - or something similar? Do you find this sort of thing useful?

    Yes and yes.
(Qualifying the latter: I'm running a project for a friend of mine that involves sending many large files to and fro, and either side updating them. Being able to order them in a shared workfolder as provided by Dropbox is a godsend!)

  3. And I suppose that the 2GB free storage in Dropbox can be used as an off-site back-up facility.

Just ordered a couple of these on Amazon. I can't believe how small these are! Could fit in a back pocket. If only they had an interface that would allow easy selection of music files it would make a great portable (and reasonably-sized) mp3 player with all my music available anywhere.

And there's a 40% price reduction at the moment so they are £80-ish each. For 1TB storage that has to be a reasonable bargain for size and portability. They must be popular because they won't have any in for a week or so.

I'm thinking of switching from my rather clunky desktop Windows PC to a Macbook Pro. But since one of the main uses of my PC is listening to my music I'm concerned about the audio output quality of the Mac.

I've been using a Creative Audigy 2 ZD soundcard for the best part of 6+ years now, and have a single 2.5mm jack running from my PC to an amp which is connected to a 5.1 system. Sounds great.

Now, we've got an iMac in the house which I connected up by the same method but the audio quality was terrible. Yes, I am running EAX effects, bass and treble boosts on my PC but even after playing with the equalizer in iTunes I can't get anything close. It doesn't even sound like it has surround output.

So what's the workaround? Get an external sound card? I'm seriously considering a new Mac but this could be the turnoff.

I want to go down the Creative route, but it doesn't look like any of their kit works with Mac. How can I replicate the same audio quality? sad

Edit: As I'm just using a jack at the moment, does that mean the PC is only giving stereo output and the amp is creating a "fake" 5.1 sound? As far as I can tell Mac's only support stereo, but it sounds considerably worse and out of balance (the same audio coming out of every speaker).

Trying out IE9 at the moment and I quite like what it has done to the look of this site. Some of the fonts seem to appear different using this browser compared to old IE and Opera: particularly the topic titles.

As long as Chrome continues to function on my machine I don't change. There seems to be a permanent icon on my toolbar to install it (part of a new update) and I refuse.

I know I've said this before but other than watching an older mono track movie or listening to a radio program I can't stand the sound. And yes that goes for downloads also. My suggestion is to get a Marantz 5004 and listen with a pair of quality headphones such as Grado. You'll be amazed at the difference.

  5. Just making a start on moving all my film music to the WD My Passport external hard drives. I can't believe how small they are. My entire film music collection, for the first time, will now be portable!

this is something that I don't need to do (the portability part). I've everything backed up on an external drive so I'm safe.

Finished copying music to first WD Passport. But sometimes my attention to detail can be annoying and generate so much more work for me. I now want to have a "folder.jpg" artwork file in every folder and I need to check that all albums are properly tagged before I copy them all to a second, backup drive. With over 4,000 folders this is going to take some time!

I have a question for you gents. How much do you know about downloading a video from YouTube (on a MP4 file) and converting into an AVI video?

I've been doing it all week actually. However, I'm on a Mac so this might not work for you. Actually, I'm pretty sure it won't so I won't go into details but if you Google your inquiry you'll find the answers you need for the PC.

Never mind, I think I got it.

    Thanks anyway!

  7. There's a video on Youtube on how to set up that useful player VLC (or is it VCL?) to convert the video to mp3.

Using Opera I save the cached temporary files for the video, rename these temp files with the extension *.flv and then use VLC player to convert from flv to mp3. A bit convoluted but it seems to give reasonable results.

VLC's a great little program but I'm not a fan of their encoding capabilities.

  8. Do you mean that the resultant copy isn't very good? Grabbing the audio from a Youtube video isn't ideal but sometimes it is all there is. And I don't know enough to do it another way.

Added album art to 1,100 folders so far (so that I see the artwork in Windows Explorer!!). Then, once finished this then onto checking that all the tracks are tagged correctly...

Nop, but now in win 7 you have to add it manually (by downloading and installing (free) windows live essentials)

I'm listening to some tracks from Michal Lorenc's Ojciec Mateusz that I "grabbed" off YouTube and they sound good to me. Must have been a good quality upload. Or maybe my hearing is just bad.
