  1. Well, there was the update that annoyed you, whcih added a program called GWX.exe (Get Windows X). It had a built-in compatibility check.

But basically if you use Windows 8.1 he shouldn't make problems with installing Windows 10 and retaining everything after you upgrade.

Drop me a PM if you want to upgrade quickly, I'll tell you how to force it (which I did).

  2. I'll hijack the thread for a while to say that I got rid of some applications that are unnecessary for me personally as I don't by any means want to synchronize my computer with a Microsoft Account (which I have from the yesteryear when I used MSN. Even Skype is an older account before MS bought it), so I don't have OneDrive and Music Groove anymore. Looking for ways to get rid of other stuff just like Cortana (which doesn't work in my language yet anyway and why would I talk to a desktop computer?) .

  3. No question, just a report.

I saved some high quality TrueType font libraries from applications that I don't use anymore or that won't even run on Windows 10: Corel WordPerfect 8 and X3 and Micrografx Designer 7.

I have relatively few fonts installed on my PC and laptops today. But I remember in the early 90s, when TTF became generally available, it was like a mania. I would create incredibly noisy layouts back then that look just ridiculous today.

    Any such memories anyone?

EDIT: 30 seconds ago I got some notice offering the domain??? Now the site proper is there again.

  5. The other day I had to restore my laptop to before I did a MediaMonkey update that wiped my music library and my customised MediaMonkey skin when the update was applied.

I don't know whether it's a coincidence but at around the same time a new command has showed up in my Windows start up and I am wondering what it is:

    Key: HKLM:RunOnce
    Program: *Restore
    File: c;|windowsSystem32rstrui.exe /runonce

Anyone know what it is and whether I can disable it from start up?

rstrui.exe is part of System Restore. I would advise not screwing around with it.

Cheers Jim and thanks for the comment.

I'd realised that it was part of System Restore but was wondering if it was a remnant of the Restore I'd recently done. The unusual thing was was that I hadn't seen it in my Windows start up list before and I was wondering why it would appear in my start up list.

It doesn't really matter anyway: it's gone from my start up. Either it's resolved itself (if it was, in fact, a problem) or may have been a temporary thing and was removed safely by CCleaner during my daily clean-up.

  7. Another question about damned computers...

After downloading a zip file (from a reputable source!) I unzipped the file to give me a series of mp3 files. I am able to move the files to another folder but I cannot delete the original folder that was created from unzipping the compressed file. When I try to delete the folder I get the pop-up saying that:

"Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:[the path to the folder]. Verify the item's location and try again."

I could not delete the folder nor could I even change the name of the folder. Signing in as administrator didn't help either.

Reading around, I found that the only way I could delete the folder at all was to open an Administrator:Command Prompt, switch the command prompt to the relevant directory, show all the relevant folders in the relevant directory and carry out am "rd" command on the pesky folder.

Without more information, does anyone have an idea why all this happened? I was surprised that the folder could not be located when I tried to delete the folder and some of the things I tried also gave me an "access denied" warning.

I am just curious to know what possible reasons for this are.

  10. Using Windows 10, Alan? It seems a habit of W10 to still show items that have already been deleted and can hence not be located any more. Refreshing the file explorer using the curved arrow at the right end of the command line should help.

  11. Cheers. Not using Windows 10 - I have been trying to keep one step of Microsoft's attempts to force the OS and its files on me...

I can see how this could be a solution to the problems I describe but the presence of the folder in the directory list when I use the Command Prompt suggested to me that the folder was still in place.

  12. Well, I have no idea what I did that messed up some of my files. But what has happened is really weird. It seems that a lot of the files in my Music folder have just gone. In some cases music files have been deleted from several folders but the folder structure has been retained, in other cases there's been the disappearance of different file types: *.txt, *.jpg (including folder structures), and files associated with the OrangeCD database (original database and all the backups - which were unfortunately kept in the same folder as the original database...not very smart).

I did find the original OrangeCD database (but no backups) in the long list of files found by Recuva, but the large file could not be recovered since some of it had been overwritten during the attempt to repair what had happened.

I think that I have been able to recover most of the music files - the retention of the folder structure let me know what was missing and I have been able to get a backup version of the OrangeCD database but that's from way back from August 2015 (I hadn't been able to work out how to use my old backup software with my new computer after the previous laptop died last July). I just need to work out what albums I need to import from my music backup (500-600 albums probably). I am sure there's a number of additional surprises awaiting me from files I don't remember that I may have lost - I've already come across some desktop shortcuts that lead to dead ends.

It's been a crappy sort of a day today.

    Sounds really bizarre.

I'm not familiar with OrangeCD, but isn't it connected to some sort of "cloud"? Or is it an old-school database that is only available as independent software on your computer?
    I am extremely serious.
  13. It is the latter.

  14. Sorry for going on about this issue I have had but I was wondering if people who know more about computing than I do could help explain something.

I'm now using Dell's Backup and Recovery to backup my data and system files. Rather than just recreating the files on an external drive it's created a series of *.inp files. I am assuming that these are where all my files are. I'd prefer the files just to be mirrored on the external drive so that I can get any problematic data files from the external drive to replace the data. But I assume that I use the Backup and Recovery program in order to select files for recovery?

And how do I transfer any data files from the backup to a new computer if there's a failure? And does the use Dell's software as a backup mean that I am restricted to getting another Dell to recover the data to a new computer? Or are the *.inp files universal backup files?

Finally, there's a new drive been created on my laptop's hard drive. Labeled as "DBR_BOOT (Hsmile", I am assuming that the backup and recovery software has created this and that it is a way in which I can boot this laptop if I have a problem with the routine booting process?

  15. Anyone here gone from Windows 7 to Windows 10 (using the free upgrade)? Is it worth it? Any big improvements? I'm a little worried that some things that work flawlessly now suddenly won't anymore, or some other annoyances that come when using a new OS, or that the visual look of it is radically different.

  16. Changed from 8.1 to 10 on three systems with no problem at all. I like the OS.

Yes. Looks like those "inp" files are Dell's proprietary compact format. So I guess it's likely you will not be able tor eda it with anything else than Dell's program(s).
Making a future mirror copy of your files would require a (robocopy) script or a specific program.

And how do I transfer any data files from the backup to a new computer if there's a failure?

You would have to make sure that the hard drive on the failed computer that contains the "inp" files is still readable.
Then connect ("slave"" ) that drive to the new computer.
Then use whatever that Dell program is called on the new computer to recover the files.
So it depends on a still working hard drive and the availability of that backup program.

And does the use Dell's software as a backup mean that I am restricted to getting another Dell to recover the data to a new computer? Or are the *.inp files universal backup files?

I would assume not, but I do not know. I would assume it's a standalone program, but you'd better check whether you can download it/install it as a standalone application.

Finally, there's a new drive been created on my laptop's hard drive. Labeled as "DBR_BOOT (H : )", I am assuming that the backup and recovery software has created this and that it is a way in which I can boot this laptop if I have a problem with the routine booting process?

May well be, but to be honest, I have no idea, sorry. It looks indeed like a Dell-proprietary thing, and I'm not so well versed in brand-specific things.

  17. Thanks Martijn. I am not keen on the proprietary nature of Dell's backup system. And I prefer the idea of having a mirror of the files and folders rather than an image. Also, there doesn't seem to be an option for incremental backing up, only full backups.

I still have your Robocopy email Martijn and may be in touch about scripts.

  18. Does anyone know of any issues with downloading files originating from Mac computers onto PCs?

Sometimes I get legitimate soundtrack promos that I download to my PC. I then uncompress them and this generates two folders: one is the folder with the mp3 files and the other is a folder called "_MACOSX". Sometimes when I try and delete this latter folder (sometimes even the former folder too) I get a window showing

    "Item not found

    Could not find this item.
This is no longer located in C:Users[username][folder structure]. Verify the item's location and try again"

I don't understand this because the file is there - I right-clicked on it to delete. A lot of the files that are difficult to delete have names that are preceded by "._" and, looking round, this seems to be associated with the Mac OS X operating system.

Does anyone know why I am having problems deleting these files? I tried to delete similar files using command prompt the last time I had this problem but I think that this led to the loss of files I had recently so I am reluctant to try this again.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  19. I have occasionally had this same issue, albeit with non-film-music-related files. Usually I can remove all other files, so do that first if you're worried about losing them. This then works for me:

    1. Open your Command Prompt. Make sure to run it as administrator (i.e. right click -> "Run as administrator").

    2. Navigate to the folder that contains the offending item (if the path is C:/Users/FalkirkBairn/Downloads/ObscureScore37/_MACOSX, type in C:/Users/FalkirkBairn/Downloads/ObscureScore37 and hit Enter)

    3. Type in "dir /x /a", hit Enter. This should give you a list of everything in that folder with both its regular file name (on the far right) and a shorthand version (just left of that).

    4. Locate the _MACOSX folder, note its shorthand name (might be identical), then type in "rd [whatever _MACOSX is called] /s". "rd" stands for Remove Directory, "/s" gets rid of any folders or subfolders there may be inside _MACOSX.

    5. You'll be asked to confirm (Y/N). Type Y, hit enter.

That should work! You might still have to manually delete the folder again, the normal way, but if so it'll go quietly this time. Hope this helps.
