About time the tremendously gifted French composer of the gorgeous La planète blanche, Les choristes, Le Peuple migrateur and Vidocq or HIMALAYA, L'ENFANCE D'UN CHEF among others.

So, does anyone know anything about these scores:

    La Rivière Espérance
    GENESIS
    Agents Secrets
    Les Rois Maudits

And what other scores by him you'd characterize the absolute must-haves?

    Haven't heard those 4 either.

What about De L'Amour? Joep is a big fan of that one. It's a bit a toned down score with a very minimalistic approach, and it combines orchestral with repeating electronic samples. The opening piece, La Cabine, is a 10 minute slow buildup, without abig explosion or so, but it's a great track!

    Hehe. Ok. wink

It has some JNH moments in it too.

  1. Les Rois Maudits is a score that I don't return to very often. That's mainly because it's quite a dark score and it's a score that I really need to be in the mood to listen to.

Orchestral in nature, it's a score that's dominated by strings (frequently in the lower register) and ominous brass. I should really take another listen to it!

De L’Amour is indeed one of my favorites.

    Some ratings:
Microcosmos: Le Peuple de L'herbe 10/10
    Himalaya - L'Enfance D'Un Che 10/10
    Harrison's Flower 9/10
    Belphègor 8/10
    De L'Amour 10/10
    Le Peuple Migrateur 9/10
    Vidocq 8/10
    Les Rivières Pourpres 9/10
    Genesis 9/10
    Le Libertine 7/10
    Le Deuxieme Souffle 8/10
    Les Choristes 7/10
    Agent Secrets 9/10
    La Planète Blanche 10/10
    Don Juan 7/10
    Les Roi Maudits 10/10

I highly recommend purchasing the Les Rivières Pourpres dvd, which includes Coulais’s audio commentary. Far more interesting than most composer's commentaries.
  2. Le Comte de monte Cristo is my favourite.

I just saw the film "Coraline" last night...for a mainstream American film, the score is amazingly full of that classic, vocal-heavy Coulais sound....very nice.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Movie, I thought, was excellent. The visuals were the most impressive aspect...story managed to be humorous and creepy and enchanting at the same time...and I have a soft spot for Dakota Fanning so that helped too.

Well, a lot of boy's choir singining, obviously, but it's a really lovely, very sweet score. Quite Coulaisian in every respect, with that small sense of sweet sentiment and slight sadness that seems to pervade his work.
    I rather like it.

Tim, the music for Les Choristes is beautiful indeed.

BTW, there's also a recording of a live concert that features music from the film:

This is one of these scores that also made me want to see the film.

Same here! Have you seen the movie? There's quite a bit of similarity with Cinema Paradiso. Both films begin the same way and have the same character (Jacques Perrin) doing the same thing-- returning to place of childhood memories.

I did recently see it on TV. I enjoyed it but I was distracted by being so familiar with the music. I can't relate to the comparisons with Cinema Paradiso as I have not seen this film (nor heard the score.)

The clips I've heard just don't do anything for me. Over the years I've gone back to them repeatedly - but same response.

This is my 3,000th post, and using it to recommend Cinema Paradiso is as good a use as I can think of! I'd be amazed if you didn't like it after hearing the whole score. I'll play it to you next time we meet up (whenever that may be).
