I thought it would be fun to claim one for myself, but when I saw a lot of my favourites gone, I thought I would have to think very hard... but then came up with Trevor almost immediately.

His Dark Crystal was one of my first and finest memories of a great score, and though I don´t love all he does, I was surprised how many very fine scores composed by him I own and play very regularly...

Last Place on Earth, Merlin, Dark City & From Hell being some of my most beloved ones.

My favorite Trevor Jones scores include From Hell, Dinotopia, Dark Crystal, and Dark City.

I was recently listening to Fields of Freedom and was enjoying the end theme from that, although one of my friends pointed out that it was like $1 a minute to buy the score. LOL. However, it was well worth it!

I heard Jones' trademark action motif, which I kind of enjoy for its familiarity yet wish he would mix it up a bit more. I enjoyed the somber moments in the 'Valley of the Shadow of Death' that were really heartfelt. I think fans of Gettysburg by Edelman will enjoy it as well die-hard Jones fans that are willing to shell out the dough.

From Hell is awesome. Dark City as well, greatly dark sound textures and ominous atmosphere. Not your greatest fan of Dinotopia or the Elfman-isms of Dark Crystal (although the later has some truly wonderful main theme) but they're fairly good indeed. Are you familiar with this one here? I'd say several of the performances (in fact a lot of them) are way better than the originals. Link contains sound clips as well.

    Hey! angry

Even if that were true (which it is NOT!), he was doing Elfmanisms before Elfman was doing Elfmanisms.

No! I just can't put to words how much those Elfmanisms with the female choirs and the ringity bell bells annoy the hell outta me! Haven't you watched the FAMILY GUY STAR WARS EPISODE IV spoof?!

female choirs and ringy bells are not in themselves Elfmanisms...he just uses them a lot for certain scores...I don't think they're really part of what defines his style. And they were certainly used before Elfman came along. That being said, however, I know what you mean.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Yeah, I really enjoy the Madrid concert CD - that's what led me to get the Fields of Freedom CD.

I never thought of comparing Jones and Elfman before. Besides, as Martijn said, Dark Crystal preceded most of Elfman's work, including Edward Scissorhands. I guess I'll be re-listening to the Dark Crystal for the "ringity bells." wink
  1. I have to admit that I have never made any connection between Elfman and Jones when listening to either composer.

So, what's there to like about "From Hell"? I've tried it a few times but been unable to absorb it. What is the best cue?

In Memoriam and Pennies for the Ferryman are easily the highlights, for me. It's brooding, it's dark, it's majestic, it's sweeping, the choir is amazing... I instantly loved it. What's not to like? cheesy

It's my favorite Jones-score, together with Dark City (which is the better one, though I'm not talking about the official release sad) (haven't heard a lot of him, though).

Thanks, Bob, I'll give "From Hell" another chance this evening, starting with that cue.

In the mean time I can mention that "For Roseanna" is a gorgeous score. I never see it mentioned, but it's melodic and thematic goodness from start til end. Recommended to anyone who enjoy his "Notting Hill" mode.

  2. "Portrait of a Prince" is my favourite track. I love it when composers quote themselves. It makes it easier for me to combine two scores for a RPG session. wink From Hell and Dark City are perfect combinations, "Portrait of a Prince" and "Memories of Shell Beach" being a lovely connection.

Wow, thanks BobdH, I'm been listening to that "In memoriam" cue on repeat and I must say that it does have some quality. I'll probably never be a huge fan of the score, as I prefer catchy melodies over athmosphere, but I still enjoy that cue somehow.

Glad you do! cheesy I can see why it's hard to get into the whole score - I've had that same problem, to listen to it all in one go - but I'm sure it'll grow on you (as it did with me) wink Yet, even if you don't, those 2 highlights I mentioned can be a great summary of the score smile How do you like Pennies for the Ferryman?

By the way, the score to Chaos is finally available on iTunes:

A physical CD is definitely not planned. Nonetheless the score is worth buying.

That's a shame. I was looking forward to hearing some of Jones' newer scores but, for me, iTunes is "out-of-bounds".
