Still one of my favourite releases from recent years is MovieScore Media's Dear Wendy, composed by Benjamin Wallfisch. That was his first film score project, now followed by The Escapist. A prison breakout movie with Ralph Fiennes and Brian Cox.

Listen to the complete score here (click the disc player next to the 'Music composed by ...' text:
    http://www.escapistthemovie.com/

The main theme, the agressive, cello driven one, sounds a bit like The Ring. But there's quite some heavy electronics in now and then too. Atmospheric scoring like in Dear Wendy too, with sometims vocals and a cimbalon. I really like it.

Thanks, Bregt for highlighting this score. It sounds great.

The similarities to The Ring are obvious - but that's what happens with a simple but distinctive use of the cello. There's a nice balance between the small-scale instrumentation, the vocals and the synths.

On a related note, there were some positive comments from some Sundance Film Festival reviews from the beginning of the year:

"...I've got to give a special shout out to Benjamin Wallfisch, who's work on the score in this incredible. The music in this is half of what made it so awesome. The music in The Escapist reminds me of Tyler Bates' 300 score, that was energetic, intense, and upbeat. Bravo Benjamin Wallfisch for composing one of my favorite scores of 2008..."

"...reminds me of Bates' 300 score..." shocked

I just had dinner with him! He's very generous in talking, with some interesting perspectives. The Escapist will be released btw!

Interview and dinner of course. We then also met Badalamenti, who was sitting by the water (Graslei) on his own, enjoying the good weather. Haha, what a cool day!

Good news!! I have the tracks that were played on the website but it will be good to have this score as an official release.

    Good!

I'll be able to replace the 25 minutes of score I sampled from the official website - but after checking to see that all the music on the MovieScore Media release is contained on the cues I already have.

And looking at what else is on the way...it's good to see Evan Evans getting a release of one of his scores. There's some effective tracks on his Hunting Humans score.

Looking at SAE's details for the upcoming release from MovieScore Media's The Escapist (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=12242) I see that it's quite a short release - 31 minutes.

  5. Anyone heard Wallfisch's new release, Summer In February?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Summer-In-Febru … p;sr=1-116

From the clips it sounds quite classical and it could be one of the scores of the year.

I liked the clips. It's getting so anything that doesn't have the all-prevailing "Zimmer" sound is refreshing.

  6. The clips are very appealing, though I haven't heard much about this score before now. In fact, not heard anything.

There's something not quite right about that state of affairs. People need to spend some time hunting down releases such as Wallfisch's.

  7. When I was on the session back a few years ago I remember overhearing Wallfisch (who was also present) and Hans actually discussing opening a studio for Wallfisch in RCP.

  8. Well, the discussion was on the level of "Call the studio manager" already.

I don't think that's a bad thing, though I am not very sure if I should discuss it in this thread, but I'll say that what I heard told me loads about who Hans wants his collaborators there to be.

My review of Summer in February, if anyone's interested:

    http://www.movie-wave.net/?p=3777
  15. I was reading over your review and just as I hit the name "James Horner" in it, I look over to the right at the widget box with flashing pictures of CD covers, and low & behold it's "The Rocketeer" flashing by at the same time.

The time shows 2:49, but it you'd think it was 11:11. Cue eerie music.

  18. Listened to Wallfisch's Hours the other day and was disappointed that he seemed to have dropped his love for enjoyable orchestral scoring in favour of the popular (predominantly) ambient/soundscape scoring.

Of course, the film makers probably asked for this type of score for the film and I wondered whether they wouldn't have been better going to someone who provides that type of score on a day-to-day basis.

Then, this morning, I read that Wallfisch now has a studio at Remote Control. I'm sure the style of scoring for Hours and his association with Remote Control is purely co-incidental.
