Fine review for a great score (which definitely has Badalamenti's traits in it, imo, it's not as detached from his style as some might have hinted so far)
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Plus anyone who's seen and heard his gorgeous CITY OF LOST CHILDREN can't argue that this (Stalingrand) is a departure from his style.

Well, he IS doing the new TWIN PEAKS show. I assume that's kept him busy for at least a year.

(funny you should ressurect this now, however, as I'm JUST NOW playing his STALINGRAD again).

Yeah, it's tragic. I mean, 85 is not tragic, but it was for me. He was my point-of-departure into film music. Wrote an obituary here (Google Translated):

  4. Thanks for sharing, Thor. Google Translate seems to have done a good job in the translation.

It was particularly interesting to read about how his music for TWIN PEAKS inspired you as a teenager and how you were able to tell that story to the composer himself.

Thanks, Alan! On the good side, it's made me explore some Badalamentis I wasn't really aware of, or had sampled properly, on Spotify and elsewhere.

In relation to The Straight Story Lynch explained: Tenderness can be just as abstract as insanity. Amongst things, this is what defines this work by Badalamenti as his magnus opus.

Well said by Lynch. It's a marvelous score, definitely top 10 Badalamenti for me. In fact, I did post a top 10 on FSM recently, which probably looks something like this:

    1. TWIN PEAKS (also includes FIRE WALK WITH ME)
    2. Gold Coast
    3. The Straight Story
    4. Cousins
    5. The City of Lost Children
    6. A Very Long Engagement
    7. Blue Velvet
    8. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
    9. Lost Highway
    10. A Late Quartet
    I am extremely serious.
