I know the Chinese Olympics are coming up soon. But what about the Olympics from the past? Which ones had really good music with CD releases?

Mark Watters' music for the 1996 Summer Olympics is by far my favourite. There's a promo of it. I haven't really listened to most of the others yet smile

MIKIS THEODORAKIS composed what's probably the most outstanding original composition for olympic games, with his "Canto Olympico", a truly magnificent musical work.

My favorite is Ryuichi Sakamoto's for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. It's included on his Cinemage cd.

Well, I'll state the obvious. John Williams has crafted some of the best Olympics music ever composed. It all started in 1984 with his Olympic Fanfare and Theme which is available on the By Request album performed by the Boston Pops.

He then composed the 1988 theme for NBC called "The Olympic Spirit."

In 1996 he composed arguably his best Olympic theme "Summon the Heroes" for games in Atlanta. That same year Basil Poledouris created a rousing piece called "The Tradition Of The Games." The original version can be found on his Honor and Glory promo and a a re-recording is on one of the Cinema Choral Classics albums from Silva.

Williams latest Olympic theme comes from the Winter Games in Salt Lake called "Call of the Champions."

All four of those Williams themes can be found on various albums.

The Olympics Spirit, Olympic Fanfare and Theme and Summon the Heroes is on the official 1996 Atanta Games album.

The full version of The Olympic Fanfare and Theme can be heard on the By Request album.

And Call of the Champions is on this album.

And if you look hard enough you will find official albums (cassettes/LPs) for the 1984 and 1988 games that contains the original recordings of "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" and "The Olympic Spirit."
