Nothing particularly informative to say, but...

Reign of Fire | Edward Shearmur

I LOVE this score. Really makes you feel invincible when you listen to it! (Who needs drugs, ay? cheesy )

I'm familiar with a lot of Shearmur's music, but not that...what's it like? Big epic action with huge choir and anvils?

Anthony, get it. Get it now believe me, you'll be blasted. It's a more modern and kinda lighter but equally masculine take on Goldenthal's big, bold, brassy music with larger than life sound and themes you just can't do anything else but to instantly love it! Shearmur's best imo and he's a composer of tremendous talent so you imagine how good REIGN OF FIRE is!

For someone who professes to be familiar with a lot of Shearmur's music, I'm genuinely surprised you haven't heard this one? It's a very harsh, atonal action score. Somewhat Goldenthalesque, due in part to Robert Elhai's dense orchestrations. (Though still very much a Shearmur score.)

If you like scores like Brian Tyler's The Hunted (which I do, a lot), then this is the score for you. Apocalyptic music at its best!

...only better than THE HUNTED. And i wouldn't call it atonal. It has a lot of dissonance but the former's one thing and being actually "atonal" is something entirely different.

Not atonal in the strictest sense, no. But I always seem to find that word somehow appropriate for these kinds of scores? (Perhaps in an abstract, subjective kind of way?)

There, I've invented a new form of musical description: subjective abstract atonality! biggrin

    Hehe that's cool.

Well i know what you mean exactly and there are a lot of people who are using the word "atonal" in that way indeed but strictly speaking, dissonance doesn't always have to do with atonal writing and dissonance can very well be done with modern playing techniques and / or augmented / diminished chords or contrapuntal / modal writing but always remaining within the tonal spectrum to which (the tonal spectrum) atonal is the exact opposite.

Here's a clear example to know what i mean, an example i am sure you're already familiar. SOUNDINGS (John Williams) http://youtube.com/watch?v=saQxoUe8dCI

    VS

    Reign of fire.

I think you can see too that while they do share some sparse common elements, overall they're nothing alike.

I only know a few of his works, like The Skeleton Key, Sky Captain and Reign of Fire. Gotta say my absolute favorite is, and probably will remain, Reign of Fire. Indeed a must like D said, if you like heavy and loud, harsh pumping orchestra's. punk

Sky Captain is a lot of fun too, an entertaining, old fashioned orchestra-only score with some great thematic work.
  1. What about K-Pax, Bob?

His best score...OK, it's a point that can be defended (even though I like his Johnny English a lot better), but second best score of the decade? shocked Come ON!
Second best score of that particular year, maybe.

Just checked, but no, not even close.

    2004 brought us
    Powell's The Bourne Supremacy
    Giacchino's The Incredibles
    James Newton Howard's The Village
Jocelyn Pook's (POOK!) The Merchant Of Venice
John Williams' The Prisoner Of Alakazam (whatever)
    Debbie Wiseman's Arsène Lupin
and of course Shigeru Umebayashi's absolutely stunning The House Of Flying Daggers
ALL of which I prefer over Sky Captain.
    ...and that's just 2004...

Sky Captain truly is a brilliant piece of work. Love the expanded version too!
Steven is right. A BRILLIANT SCORE FROM A BRILLIANT COMPOSER!
I always put Reign Of Fire equal pegging with Sky Captain. Both equally great (I'm avoiding using the word 'brilliant' again) scores!
Will some one please give the man a huge fantasy film to score! Now that would be brill.....awesome!

I wouldn't either, though it'd sure be in my top 5 of 2004.

Haven't heard that one yet! Did see the ending of the film, though, and didn't think it was overly special. Have always meant to listen it someday, just to know what everyone kept talking about, since its brought up in every Shearmur discussion dizzy

K-pax is not comparable to REIGN OF FIRE, COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, SKY CAPTAIN or anything in this vein of Shearmur's work. It's melodic, touching, small-scale and fragile, at times heartbreaking but it has to be viewed within the (excellent) movie it accompanies to be understood and appreciated fully.

Great composer! Like Reign of Fire very much, especially that kind of aliens kind of get-the-hell-out-of-here track. Forgot the name of the track, it has some snare drum and a great rythm. Also the second last track keeps and building, great!

In case you may have misunderstood: I think only Anthony refered to it as possibly being the best (which he disagreed with). No one else did.

Oh sorry, I mean NO ONE ELSE DID.

  3. On top of having recorded a score a while back for the upcoming movie "Bill", and recording one for "Passengers" about a month ago, he is now scoring:

Composer Edward Shearmur has recently recorded his score to the new Walt Disney Pictures comedy College Road Trip, which stars Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné. The scoring session took place at the Sony Scoring Stage, and we've got pictures and coverage from the event!
