The music and Superman got horribly worse at the end.

Nah. It's all pretty good -- loved the transition from Williams to Zimmer.

It's only that Zimmer track that's any good in the score, at least IMO. I don't remember John Williams music dividing people.

  1. Not at the time, but sadly the modern generation of youtube internet people started to seriously diss Williams' material basically on the strength that the modern version was done by Hans Zimmer...

I'd have more hilariously stupid stories like that, too.

Yes, retrospective dissing seems pointless and smacks of a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that a lot of people don't like Zimmer's MoS despite many people ( myself included ) feeling that it was time to move on from JW's themes.

  2. It wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, really, it was more of a replacement case (if HE does the score, the previous one must have been crap, because HE is so great). It wasn't as much a reaction to the negative criticism from the fans of the genre (which the YouTube people are oblivious of, to them film music is ONLY Hans Zimmer and nothing else).

The problem is that for modern youth Hans Zimmer is a cultural phenomenon rather than a normal film composer. Think of an authentic situation like this:

When Brian Tyler's score to Modern Warfare 3 was released, there was a hilarious situation when people, of course, started posting his score on youtube. So, the same track was posted twice. Once as Hans Zimmer (who wrote the theme to the previous game in the series and of course 90% of the public thought he did the WHOLE thing, no matter the rather precise credits - main theme by HZ, music by Lorne Balfe and about 12 additionals), once as Brian Tyler. Reactions?

Tyler's credit: What a piece of crap, if Hans Zimmer scored it it would have been much better.

Zimmer's credit: OMG, another masterpiece from the man! What a perfect track!

And it was the same cue...

  3. In that case it's the emperor's new clothes. Hans Zimmer can do no wrong. rolleyes

Which makes it all the more remarkable that even the Zimmer fans weren't 100% pleased with On Stranger Tides. tongue
  4. Zimmer HIMSELF calls it the low point of his career.

And well he might. It's a bloody awful score. At least it isn't Zimmer's fault it turned out the way it did, though. vomit

Sadly, his popularity I would liken to Justin Bieber's, except that he isn't called boyfriend by half of Twitter...

True! Unlike Foetus boy and Miley Smiley who are PANTS! Sadly I think both of them will be burnt out wrecks in the future.

  8. The truth is that he's a first case of a film composer becoming a true celebrity and achieving a cultural phenomenon status (there are even MEMES about him), which does worry me a bit.

But the guy's done so much good stuff that I am happy that he does get some praise if... not exactly always educated. If that praise could have been kept at bay I would be even more happy, simply smile

Really? Where??? Respectively no more or less than the Williams, Morricone, Barry, Mancini, Elfman as far as I can see.

None of them are up there with film stars, pop stars etc, not by a long shot. You're well off the mark Pawel.

  9. And you - me at least - keep hearing things like: "O, isn't there that German guy? He made the music for Star Wars, right?"

I haven't heard of internet phenomena regarding these composers, though interestingly two of the names ended up being parodied by, of all things, Family Guy. Williams was never interviewed by the major websites, including Huffington Post (!) and things like that.

All these names are popular outside of the common population, but regarded in a different way than Hans is. The kids aren't making memes about any of them and I don't think they would do that if memes were available back in the 60s/70s, a film composer would have a different position and air to him at the time.

Yes, I have heard about John Barry having, to say the least, a very colourful life back in the 1960s, but in general the regard for composers writing for orchestras was a tad different. Williams, Morricone were regarded as a star, but I think, they had the air of respect given to a popular classical composer of the time. Very high, respectful regard, not like a rock star, weren't they?

I see no point in comparing who's more popular than the other, sporting event-style.

They're all very famous film composers that are recognized even outside our small circles, at least for those with a good grasp of popular culture (there are obviously those who don't care at all and wouldn't recognize any of them by name).

The only difference, perhaps, is that Zimmer is for the 'younger crowd', relatively speaking, and that his appeal operates in a different kind of music.
    I am extremely serious.
  11. That's why I wouldn't call John Williams' popularity a celebrity status.

  12. As soon as James Newton Howard gets on stage, performs, then has screaming girls throwing their panties at him, we'll talk celebrity.

They may not be as popular and well known as, say, Tom Cruise, but given who is considered a 'celebrity' on most reality TV shows and competitions, I'd say Zimmer and Williams are certainly worthy of the title.
  13. John Williams certainly is more popular than John Cage or Hans Werner Henze. At the same time he is not as popular as someone on top of the pop charts. Maybe he is as popular as Billy Joel, I dunno.

Film music as a whole belongs to the foggy realm between pop and classic. You find this realm in all forms of art, music, literature, performing arts ... I have always been especially interested in what's going on within that realm.

Celebrity has become a bit of a dirty word really, more connected with reality star wannabes.

How's the weather there, captain, my captain?
I would assume it's a bit chilly this time of year?

I have my sights set on rather a warmer destination in a few weeks!

I have some thoughtful, well though out, critical comments for her:

Fuck you, you fucking bitch. If I were your fucking neighbor, I'd motion for the fat kids to come to my house, given them TWICE the candy to make up for your fuckingess, then laugh "MUWHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!".
