  1. It's a bit gruesome - Tim, I'm assuming that this is for real? - but there seems to be about 200 dead bodies lying around the summit of Mt. Everest. Apparently those who find them have no way of getting them off the mountain without endangering themselves. And sometimes it means leaving those near death to their fate.

Grim stuff indeed. Near base camp there are many memorial cairns to dead climbers.

One of New Zealand's most famous mountaineers, Rob Hall*, is still sat near the top of Everest.

*Was also one of the main characters of INTO THIN AIR, a book I highly recommend. ( the film version was appalling but did have a fantastic score by Lee Holdridge )

  2. I saw this headline and I thought I might read about it a little out of curiosity...

Cops hunting for breast pump bandit...

But then I found this story while searching that one:
Woman sprays chemist staff with BREAST MILK in bizarre distraction ...

A woman in Germany, described as busty, sprayed store employees with her breast milk and stole money while they stood there stunned.

I had to look when a headline in a Norwegian online newspaper today said: "Dutchman Martijn spellbound by Norway -- made unique video!":

    http://www.dagbladet.no/2015/01/04/tema … /36973419/

As it turned out, it was not OUR Martijn, but the video is very cool nonetheless. Check it out!

Figuring in my nigh-neurotic dislike against any place without palm trees this shouldn't have come as much of a surprise. wink

  16. Some of you may have noticed Blue Bell ice cream had recalled ice cream products and that it has not been available for two weeks now, because of reports of contamination and people getting sick (at least five cases). I heard today they are recalling all their products now.

If you have any purchased in the last three weeks, chuck it. Any store that is still carrying it, is ignoring the total recall.

  18. I'm having an extra long free weekend currently and I use it for clearing up the attic of my mother's place. I'm throwing away loads and loads of stuff that has gathered over the decades and that is of no use for anyone any more.

You come across curious artefacts of your past during such campaigns. Three babies I just found and that I am definitely NOT going to dump: My old STAR WARS widescreen VHS tapes.

These tapes were released in 1992 in the UK. I had just finished high school back then. They were expensive and hard to come by in Germany. Before the dawn of DVD video it was highly uncommon to watch films in their native language here. Those tapes marked the first time I saw the films in their original language and in wide screen. Since they feature the unaltered films they still have some practical value. I might even watch them again. After all I just also found my old VHS player stored away in the attic.

    smile Volker

EDIT: I also found something that would probably appeal to Timmer. When I just dumped my old VHS tape of The Lost Word: Jurassic Park, I found a holographic picture card. It shows the logo of the film. If you move it around the head of a T-Rex appears.

I aim to have one of those attic clean-ups at my parents' place too one of these days.

It's funny what you say about original languages and dubbing, though. In Norway, only children's films are dubbed. The rest is in the original language with subtitles. So it was always a hoot when we went to Germany in my childhood and teenage years and watched television with dubbing. Arnold had his own dubber, Sylvester Stallone etc. It was so alien and "exotic" to us. smile
    I am extremely serious.
  19. That's what everybody says about German dubbed films. I guess it depends on the market. 100 million speakers of German will pay for the effort. And then it's just a question of what you are used to.

I remember that Schwarzenegger offered to dub his own voice into German but was turned down as apparently his accent sounds "funny" to Germans. Any enlightenment on this Captain?

I was ruthless with all my VHS films and binned them all.

As did I...with one exception: the Turner Movie version of Treasure Island, with Charlton Heston and (a VERY young!) Christian Bale, with music by the Chieftains. As long as that isn't released on DVD I'm not letting this one out of my sight!

  20. It's funny that Thor would mention Schwarzenegger and Stallone, since both actually have the same dubbing voice in Germany. So when both appear in the same film one needs another voice and that's awkward for viewers.
Since DVD came along people have gotten more used to watch films in English. In big cities cinemas offer screenings of the original versions of current films.
Dubbing is a big market for actors here and some specialise in it. Most of them are primarily stage actors, so you are not familiar with their voices from film and TV.
I know, that many British and American actors have great respect for their German "counterparts" and they will often meet with them at premiers. How strange it must be to regard yourself on the screen talking with another voice and language.
Now Schwarzenegger's pronunciation is flavoured with a strong Austrian accent, that bleeds through even in his English. Since Terminator androids were not supposed to be of Austrian origin, this would seem funny indeed.
By the way, that chubby Germany boy from THE SIMPSONS has a Swizz accent in the German dub.
