    Whoa - I never saw that trailer before! And the voice is great, too. Very different, but cool.

    Yes, he is dubbing Willis since day one, and here when we hear his voice in an ad, or in another film, we automatically say: hey, Bruce Willis has spoken! smile

    Even some years ago, when the dubber (Ramon Langa) was interviewed in a TV show I couldn´t help but watching Bruce Willis as he spoke.

    Yeah, it´s the very same effect with the german voice. He did Kurt Russell, too, and he´s hired a lot for commercials about macho- or male-oriented products. He´s a very known actor here, too. I´ve seen him in hundreds of german TV productions.

    And there´s another guy who dubs both Stallone and Schwarzenegger, so we were rather lucky they never did a team-up movie. biggrin

    Why Schwarzenegger gets dubbed? Well, his Austrian accent would have the audience ROFLing... they are our neighbors, and somehow, that accent wouldn´t work for us... I believe. biggrin

    That would have been kinda funny biggrin

    Here the guy who dubs Schwarzenegger is also a very reknown actor, and the one that dubs De Niro (and Stallone; yeah, De Niro and Stallone) is as popular as Willis´.

  5. We have the same dubbers for Robert de Niro and Harvey Keitel, and for Robert Redford and Patrick Steward. Every time I see a Redford movie, I have to think about Trek. And until the very recent years, William Shatner and Sean Connery had the same voice.

    When I watch these dubbed trailers all I can think is... ridiculous. sad
    It seriously makes me a bit sad.

    I can't believe you actually prefer some dubbed voices to the original, because... well, it simply isn't the voice of the actor!

    We have dubbed movies too, for children. But I always, always think they are worse than the original. Like it's not as well acted or something. And although we have some excellent Dutch actors, it always sounds so recorded-in-the-studio, like with animations.

    I don't think not speaking English is a good excuse as long as people can read subtitles.

    I'm trying to imagine a bit that maybe you are used to it when you've grown up with dubbed movies but it's hard.

    You know, I really, really understand where you´re coming from, and it is as you said, we grow up with dubbed stuff, and 99% (or even less) of the people never think about dubbing at all. It´s absolutely normal for them.

    It was only when I discovered, at around 14, I believe, that half the episodes of Classic Trek weren´t shown here (until much later), I started watching english stuff, because I wanted to see them, regardless of how much I understood or not.

    These days I prefer original versions by far, but I must say, watching something with subtitles bothers me, because it always makes me miss some stuff, especially when there´s a lot of text and I would prefer watching the reactions in faces, the acting, you know. I prefer looking into an actor´s face when he speaks. But since my English isn´t good enough to understand everything as much as I want to (some accents are hard, and some actors talk really fast, and slang is hardest), of course I use subtitles when available.

    Well, it's because this is how you learned all these years. The rest of the world who has subtitle doesn't have a single problem, it's not like you stare at the subtitle. You basically hear and just glimpse fast enough, you're not actually loosing anything off the movie.

    It's all a matter of habit.

    I know in some languages subtitles are more complicated because the sentences (and words) are much longer, I thought it was in German and French? So it isn't always the perfect solution either I guess...

    And about reading them, I think growing up with subtitles means you learn to watch the actors and sort of quickly scan the subtitles if you didn't get it all at once!

  12. Yeah, I know. My wife doen´t read the subtitles at all. I´m used to rely on them, so that´s how it is.

    What really pisses me off, though, is when the subtitles are a bit faster than the voices, and it happens a lot that i would have preferred a certain yes or no or cool sentence out of the actor´s mouth first, even if dubbed.

    I thought Spain was one of the few countries that still has dubbed stuff. If it was up to me, I´d ban dubbing. Since I started watching movies in its original language (fortunately a long time ago) I enjoy much more the experience. And in some cases, as with asian films, dubbing is almost ridiculous, as it´s impossible to coordinate the voices with the mouth movements.
    Anyway, I have zero hopes that someday dubbed stuff will disappear (at least here in Spain); people is too used to it, and too lazy to make an effort to read the subtitles. Too bad for them, they don´t know what they are missing.

    Exactly. It´s a wonder they didn´t dub the natives in Dances with Wolves or the whole Passion of the Christ (God, I love how they speak Latin in there).

    On the other hand, they dub Hiro & Ando in Heroes... crazy You can imagine how well that works... rolleyes

    The Americans speak german and the Russians speak russian until a russian officer (?) gets killed. From that point the Russians, at least the main characters, speak german with a russian accent. dizzy

    Yeah, it´s situations like these which make life really interesting for the dubbing actors. biggrin

    I don´t remember what they did with HfRO, but I´m 95% sure they let the german actor dub the russian parts, too, just to avoid the break.

    In long running TV series, this kind of stuff can get ridiculous, for example if it wasn´t obvious that in season X, a character would suddenly start singing a song in an episode. If the dubbing actor can´t sing, they usually give you the original instead. If the actor can sing at least a bit OR if the original is considered to be amateurish as well, them let the dubbing actor do it.

    Which brings me to dubbing professional singing...

    The musical episode of Xena was completely dubbed, but they got really good musical singers for that one, and the lyrics were equally well translated. The musical episode of Buffy was dubbed, only the songs where left as they were, and shown with subtitles. That was strange, because the german voices were nothing even close to the originals.

    Disney stuff of course is completely dubbed as well, usually with a very high standard.

    Guys, you have to realise that, regardless of all the love for the originals, it is very hard to do a good dubbing. Finding a voice which comes close to the original, find guys who can actually sing and act, writing a good german version, and so on. It´s fine if you want to vomit, but if you had to live with dubbing for your whole life, you would be thankful for the stuff I selected, believe me. And I can´t believe I´m actually defending the quality of german dubbing. I´m used to be one of its harshest critics, but compared to other stuff that´s out there, we´re very lucky.

    On the other hand, growing up with dubbing helps to develop a completely different attitude to dubbing... Here´s some fanstuff with a certain german dialect at work...

  23. Yeah it's a good little clip. The way he announces himself is so hilarious.

    There's another known voice, of the younger generation I guess and he always says 'Now...' in the trailers. He does a lot game trailers as well as film trailers. But he will never sound as cool as The Don. punk

    Best dubbing ( translate as unintentionally funniest ) I ever saw was the film COMMANDO in Thai, Thai is such a gentle 'sing-song' language and seeing 'Ahhhnuld' dubbed into Thai was a hoot, every time the dubbing came in all the sound effects/music etc disappeared biggrin wink

    Dubbing is silly, of course, but there's one particular exception, and that is Bollywood. All the song sequences in these films are dubbed by other people, even if they have a very different voice than the actor. But it WORKS, because all these sequences are removed from reality or rather; take place in a different fictional universe; a stylized universe.
    I am extremely serious.
