Friday - The Return of the King - The Complete Recordings - Howard Shore

This is cheating slightly. I wasn't at work and had the chance to listen to the whole thing (all 230 minutes of it) in one sitting. Wow. What an exhausting, overwhelming, magnificent experience.

This morning I listened to Alatriste by Roque Banos. I'm about 1/3 through, and so far it is a little too minimalist for my taste, but I'll see what the rest of the cd is like on my way home.

Interesting that you use the word "minimalist" to describe Alatriste. Maybe you mean offbeat / atmospheric or something? I would personally never attribute minimalism in its strict sense to something like ALATRISTE.

Anyway, i'd say give it some time and repeated listens since it's one of your first listens 'cause Alatrste has - apart the soft love theme, some very vibrant action cues with impressive percussion and boldly memorable and melodic themes, especially towards its last 3rd. So you might want to do that first. Give it space to breath smile I, for one, believe it's one of Banos best works to date.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Sometimes there's a bit of confusion in the term "minimalist". Of course, there's the musical style of minimalism - Glass, etc. But sometimes you read people talking about minimalist scores where there's a very bare orchestration with minimal use of instruments.

I've not listened to Alatriste for a while but I do remember there being passages where there's a very sparse orchestration.

Luckily I hate both, so no confusion for me. biggrin

Listening to Bim Bam Smash whilst driving is probably highly dangerous.

Tell me about it. I'm an erratic driver at the best of times, so imagine what a cue like that does!? shocked shame

    >> shame << too right slant

I don't think anyone should drive playing music that pumps them up!

I know, this is an old topic.

Playing music that pumps you up while operating vehicles can get you in big trouble.

In 6th grade while on a hunting trip in Georgia I totaled a 4-wheeler and blacked out while humming the James Bond theme. Yes!!!!!!! punk

As I said in the annoy column ex marine Al
    listen to more classical music!
  2. I don't add to this thread as often as I used to since I more-or-less listen to my mp3 player on random every day. But as the 20 minute journey was pretty much dominated by the 12-minute cue "Casino" from Wolfram De Marco's Loft I thought that I would mention it.

For me, this one track is one of my most enjoyable tracks. Pretty much dominated by the excellent ostinato - heard in samples 1 and 6 on SAE's page (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=10590) - I love how De Marco's managed to get such variety of feeling from an (apparently) simple device. And there's an ebb and flow to the cue that keeps the interest throughout.

I'm listening to the clips at SAE at the moment and I'm off to listen to this awesome cue again...if you've not heard at least this cue then I recommend it. And buy it!

Interestingly, now I have an ipod and am at last ABLE to listen to music while I walk or bicycle to work (although I prefer to do the latter without blocking my aural sense out!). However, I don't have any work to go to! slant

I listened to M83, a French alternative/electronics/new age/rock band that makes insane music.

I don't have an iPod/iPhone connection in the car, but I do have an audio connector cable. However, I usually just burn some cd's that I like at the moment onto a cd-rw and drive around with that for a few months.
