This thread is about the best movies of certain composers. So it's not about their best scores but rather about the best movies they wrote music for. Here is my list for a start:
Ennio Morricone: Cinema Paradiso
James Horner: Braveheart
James Newton Howard: Grand Canyon
Hans Zimmer: The Last Samurai
Alan Silvestri: Forrest Gump
Miklós Rózsa: Ben Hur
Maurice Jarre: Dead Poets Society
Jerry Goldsmith: Forever Young
Well...suddenly I cannot think of other composers...Maybe later I will continue -

Hmmmm, very subjective.
Walkabout - John Barry
Chinatown - Jerry Goldsmith
Laurnce of Arabia - Maurice Jarre
E.T. The Extraterrestrial - John Williams
Aliens - James Horner
The Great Escape - Elmer Bernstein
Taxi Driver - Bernard Herrmann
Once Upon A Time In The West - Ennio Morricone
The Shawshank Redemption - Thomas Newman
The Godfather Part II - Nino Rota
Ben-Hur - Miklos Rozsa
The Treasure of The Sierra Madre - Max Steiner
And I could still change some of those choices. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Best movies? Interesting angle.
Ennio Morricone: Days of Heaven or Once Upon a Time in the West or The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
Hans Zimmer: The Thin Red Line.
Elliot Goldenthal: Heat.
Jerry Goldsmith: Patton or Chinatown. Or Alien. Or The Sand Pebbles.
Miklos Rozsa: Double Indemnity or Providence?
Alexandre Desplat: Read My Lips is probably my favourite.
Zbigniew Preisner: Trois Coleurs Bleu.
John Williams: The Empire Strikes Back. Raiders. Munich.
Maurice Jarre: Lawrence of Arabia.
Bernard Herrmann: Citizen Kane.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Interesting choices, Michael, but I would say that Rouge is better than Bleu. That's my personal preference only though.http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

I'd say that Schindler's List is the best film Williams has ever scored (again, subjective isn't it?). It was the first film (including documentaries) I'd ever watched about the Holocaust that really allowed me to appreciate its importance. Most film geeks will probably argue there's an obscure, European film out there which hammers it home even more effectively, but for me that takes little away about how much I appreciate this film. So there, fuck you. -

I'm all for a film that reaches a mass audience and has the importance of a film like this. A film like Schindlers can deliver a powerful emotional message that old newsreal sometimes can't.
I think films like this and a visit to Auschwitz should be on every school curriculum. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

While Schindler's List is not the best film about the holocaust by a long stretch, it is surely the most important - having the world's most famous, and most bankable, film director make such a film was very important.
My own choices:
Goldsmith - Patton
Williams - Jaws
Bernstein - To Kill a Mockingbird
Morricone - Once Upon a Time in the West
Barry - Dances with Wolves
Jarre - Lawrence of Arabia
Zimmer - The Thin Red Line -

JAWS!? of course! I've changed my mind already.
James, What IYO are the best movies dealing with the Holocaust?
IMO the best was actually a TV series, simply called HOLOCAUST. Had a great cast including Tom Bell, Ian Holm, James Woods, Meryl Streep & Marius Goering plus a truly fine score by Morton Gould. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Of course you can talk about it wherever you want, I just thought it´s a great topic that came up here, certainly worth a discussion of its own.
