Christopher Bowen

" flows forward in light tranquillity and pleasant minimalism "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Annie Award nominated stop-motion feature $9.99, directed by Tatia Rosenthal, features an original score composed by Christopher Bowen. Bowen's previous works include the acclaimed Shira Geffen / Etgar Keret drama Jellyfish. The film follows a number of individuals who live in a Sydney apartment complex looking for meaning in their lives. And MovieScore Media makes sure you will not miss it.

The album opens with "The Sunshine Coast" and a fetching rhythmic piece takes you immediately on a journey for something different. The piano hopping around in "A Buck's Worth" or the cello in "The Truffle Shaves", the score has an undeniable lighter than air quality, making it very relaxing for a listen. In "The Truffle Shaves" it is the main theme we hear again.

And so the score keeps flowing forward on a very plesant manner. The main theme with piano in "A Girl Only Prettier" and with piano / cello in "The Meaning of Life", the cello pizzicato of the main theme in "Almost Perfect" (creating a Little Miss Sunshine effect), the light suspense during "The Balcony's Edge" or the emotional dreamy "Good Things Never Last / I Pushed Him" and "I Want to See you Fly", $9.99 does hold the same underscore after a while.

Not that this is bad, it's just once you're familiar with the sound, don't expect it to change a lot. The rhythmic delight dancing on the theme statement in "Pigs Love Parks" goes for an emotional climax and is by far the most promising track, alongside that cool opening cue and the rhythmic delightful "Swim Like a Dolphin" (which holds a lovely moment for solo cello).

Apart from the weird final track "Happiness", $9.99 flows forward in light tranquility and pleasant minimalism. Christopher Bowen didn't need to write something grand, he needed to write something light and effective. And my god does it successfully do that. For those that like their music light and pleasant, $9.99 holds just the right moments for cello and piano to keep repeating it on the background. Basically, it will Zen your listening experience.

The album is a digital release only and this for the price of, well take one guess ...
