An Everlasting Piece

Hans Zimmer

" Can you jiggy with it? "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

2000 promises and delivers for Hans Zimmer fans, and what it delivers is a wide diversity of styles. Gladiator, Mission: Impossible 2 and The Road to El Dorado all offered something different. But be sure that the fourth on our lists will offer the biggest diversity of all, namely Irish jigs. The better parts of An Everlasting Piece are especially the last, while the first ones will make you wanna jiggy tonight. "Repo Man", "Day Job", "You Gotta Lose to Win" and "Toupée or not Toupée" dance the Irish jig with a healthy rhythm, one that at times asks a lot of you. It's understandable some will lose the pace and fall behind, it's understandable others will want nothing more for the remainder of the time. The Last track "Jiggy's Last Jam" throws everything even together to create mayhem. It's made by friends for fans and finishes appropriately with a man sniffing and blowing his last breath away. A dollar for the one who can guess who that man is? To tell you the truth, start this score for several people who adore or hate Hans Zimmer and they would have a hard time identifying Zimmer's sound, because only the trademarks tell us it is Hans Zimmer's work all right. That makes him a diverse pawn in the film music industry, something we of course know longer as today. But it also shows how he can surprise us when he gets carte blanche. Because An Everlasting Piece is basically Zimmer and his friends having fun. Sometimes a little overboard fun from time to time, but for a buck you surely get more than you're ever bargained for, making the score an at times delicious guilty pleasure.

For a dollar he offered his services to Barry Levinson and gave the producers an offer they couldn't refuse.
The score with all its trademarks benefits especially from the vibrant sound.
"F**kin' Genius" is a curious one, giving you a perfect example of what Zimmer can do when he creates a dreamy mood out of nothing.
"Piece Offering" is the best one, offering the main theme in full force at the end, including with obligatory bagpipes.
Of course not everyone will love it, it's an acquired taste.
