Black Beauty

Danny Elfman

" Absolutely beautiful "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

One year after Elfman's most beloved dramatic score Sommersby, he enriched himself in a timeless classic that has been filmed many times before. Black Beauty, the beautiful black stallion has surely received its fair share of adaptations before, and the one I'm referring to is where Danny Elfman paints it emotional while Beauty paints it black. The movie version starring Sean Bean and David Thewlis is definitely worth seeking out, only because it holds one of life's most charming scores.

I'm not telling a lie, I still believe that Black Beauty holds some of the finest emotional firecrackers Danny Elfman has composed in his career. And it all starts with "Main Titles", a beautiful rendition of the main theme of the movie. Lead forward by the amazing sound of the violin, it is this main theme that will break hearts in the movie and throughout on disc. A stunning version of the main theme is heard many times throughout the score, but surely the most explosive one is found in "Memories".

Combining the violin with more classical instruments like the piano, Black Beauty is a discovery from start to finish. We have twisted, brutal moments where Elfman dares to go berserk and wild, this for instance in "Ginger Snaps" and "Wild Ride / Dream", or we have downright brilliant and exuberant dances of delight, and "Gang on the Run", "Jump for Joy" and "Kicking up a Storm" are surely some of Elfman's most brilliant creations yet. And the score around that is simply connecting the upbeat with the heavy.

Black Beauty is definitely one of Elfman's best scores, because it holds some of his most emotional and developed writing yet. It doesn't capture the zany or out of control music, and everything that's written here is for a purpose, to tell you the story of Black Beauty the way it is meant to be told. I had the honor of hearing the music inside the movie too, and inside it shines like only glorious filmmusic can shine. So if you really dig Elfman's emotional material, you will discover that Black Beauty goes deep and creative, to dazzle you by the magic of its wining score.
