Camille 2000

Piero Piccioni

" Every single alternate take on a cue is wondrous and the electric organs are the most spectacular and addictive ones ever heard in a score "

Written by Joep de Bruijn - Review of the regular release

Piero Piccioni's world opened up to me from the moment I first listened to Un Tentativo Sentimentale, a score full of sad but chill and addictive jazz. The composer's scores are some of the coolest and grooviest ones from the sixties and seventies. Together with Gianni Ferrio, Ennio Morricone and Piero Umiliani he has written the most sexy, funky and touching scores for mostly (boring) sentimental, erotic drama's, besides the great crime thrillers in that period. And almost no one who tried to write like them in more recent days succeeded at it.

Interested? Dive into this type of music by exploring the fine score collection that Right Tempo/Easy Tempo record label has set up. They've released stunning scores such as Svezia, Inferno E Paradiso (Umiliani), Travolti Da Un Insolito Destino Nell'Azzurro Mare D'Agosto (Piccioni) and La Morte accarezza a Mezzanotte (Ferrio).

Camille 2000 is a rather psychedelic, romantic and sexy drama that's easily forgotten, unlike the amazing score by Piccioni that rightfully received a cult classic status through the years. Basically the film is about a couple (Armand and Camille) that enjoy their sensual romance, until the father of Armand separates them, pulling Armand into the psychedelic world of drugs. The principal theme written by the composer, is the romantic, seductive theme for Camille, performed by enchanting, lush strings. To give an idea of what sort of score this is, look at the opening cue "Camille 2000 (titles)". The gentle melody of Camille's theme is slowly passing by, and switches gear into a funky, groovy sound with ongoing baseline, gorgeous electric organ and terrific horn, playing the theme. From that moment on, Piccioni uses a variety of different styles, atmospheres/moods and turns several themes into new suites, performed very differently.

Every single alternate take on a cue is wondrous and the electric organs are the most spectacular and addictive ones ever heard in a score. Lots of composers used these organs obviously, but nowhere close to this quality. Very steamy and cool music.
