Christine

John Carpenter and Alan Howarth

" Not all cars honk that well "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

John Carpenter has made strange movies before. And I guess a murdering car isn't even one of his most estrange. Christine's the name of the car and it will destroy anyone who comes in its way. And once again Alan Howarth is credited alongside John Carpenter when it concerns the musical progression.

However when it comes to classics, Christine doesn't appear to be one of them. Not in movie status, not in soundtrack status. And perhaps it's got to do about the mere fact some tracks itself present the reason why. For instance "Arnie's Love Theme" and "Arnie" is not something you would expect. You don't expect the ethnic theme, you don't expect the eerie hypnotizing tone. The version heard in "Show Me" is much more simplistic but overall works more in the whole sound design of the movie.

This awkward tone repeats itself a lot during the score, and in fact represents the somewhat inhuman bond between man and car. It is heard during "Obsessed with the Car", "Nobody's Home / Restored" and "Darnell's Tonight".

In fact there's something alienating and cold about the whole score. Not that this is new to John Carpenter albums, but here it listens disturbing. So for instance, the cold tone during "Football Run / Kill your Kids" is much more frightening than I wanted it to be. On the other hand the main theme surrounding the beat is all you need to make a cue effective ("Moochie's Death", "Buddie's Death", "Christine Attacks (Plymouth Fury)" and "Moochie Mix Four").

Due to the fact Christine isn't one of the many classics of John Carpenter, the album listens awkward and uncomfortable. And while Christine has everything a Carpenter score should have, it doesn't have a memorable tune. The score is effective all right, in fact effective like all other Carpenter soundtracks. But Christine lacks that something extra. And it is that something extra that makes us return to his music. And perhaps that's why the movie isn't considered to be a classic in the first place.
