Cinderella

Patrick Doyle

" Are you ready for Magic? "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

The Disney fairy book list is beginning to produce some really wonderful results. Take Cinderella for instance. A truly magical film full of wonder, magic, emotion and joy all around (if it wasn't for the occasional wicked stepmother scene). But everything Ella is feeling on screen, you feel double through Patrick Doyle's music. Because when done right, movie music goes for the heart, and Doyle leaves no spot on that heart untouched. It's remarkable really, but Doyle goes back to the standards of his own A Little Princess to give us back that magical Doyle quality we we're missing these past few years.

Because even though my first listen enthralled me, you really have to experience the effect it unleashes inside the film. It not only makes the film ten times more magical, it itself unveils magical qualities you begin to re experience once you give the CD a second spin after that. For instance, the magical main theme versions ("The First Branch", "The Stag", "Pumpkins and Mice" and "You Shall Go") become truly a mind blowing magical experience, the festive waltzes ("La Polka de Minuit", "La Valse de l'Amour") dance a lot more of delight than before, and the truly riveting action piece "Pumpkin Pursuit" becomes the energetic crowd pleaser as heard in the film. But perhaps it's needed to address once again the magic that comes from Doyle's enchanting melodies. I mean the main theme with glorious vocals or the song theme (which Ella sings in the film) beautifully in "Who is She". It are moments like these that you get those unmistakable goosebumps you rarely get in today's music, a reminder how music can truly change a scene in the film.

Cinderella is a joy of a film, and a truly wonderful soundtrack experience. Perhaps a bit too long, perhaps it focuses a bit too much on the waltzes (some of which are heard for just several seconds in the film), perhaps it loses a bit of focus during several minutes, and sadly I have to admit that I didn't get the song melody sung by Lily James at the end of the film (the song "A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes" is not the song you'll be looking for). But perhaps if you make your own playlist of 55 minutes, you'll experience a truly wonderful moment of cinema magic, cinema Disney magic. Because when there is kindness, there is goodness. When there is goodness, there is magic. When there's magic, there's good old Patrick Doyle.
