Cop Out

Harold Faltermeyer

" Faltermeyer hasn't lost his sound whatsoever "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

It's strange to see Harold Faltermeyer back in action, but it gives me some satisfaction as well. After all, Harold Faltermeyer is one of the products of the 80's, considered now to be obsolete due to the disappearance of the cheap synthesizer movie music. But considering director Kevin Smith wanted that typical buddy cop feel out of the 80's, Faltermeyer was one of the logical choices. And apparently after all these years, Faltermeyer hasn't lost his sound whatsoever.

If you know what Faltermeyer scored back then, and how he made it sound like, you'll discover that Cop Out isn't much different from what he composed some 20 years ago. Of course the influences around the tone of the score are a bit more updated, but the main general sound is pretty much Faltermeyer in general. Of course that pretty much decides already if you think Cop Out is a score for you, or not.

Because "Cop Out" is pretty much the stuff Faltermeyer became known for. An upbeat cool tune that takes several ideas of the Beverly Hills Cop theme is what opens the score with a nostalgic feel. This throwback to the 80's continues throughout the rest of the score, either menacing and dark as in "Po Boy is Bad" and "Vicious Drones" (a rather boring cue), or cool, playful and eclectic like in "Drive", "Cool Cops", "Shoot Em" and "Brooklyn Car Chase".

People shouldn't expect loud or great things from a cue like "Brooklyn Car Chase", because Faltermeyer keeps it light, fluffy and actually quite moronic. It's all more tongue in cheek really, like the whole score in fact.

The score ends however very pleasantly and even refreshing. The main theme in "Night Stakeout" by then has grown infectiously on you, while "Muy Safe-O" and "I Love You" show Faltermeyer going romantico, bringing either a very lovely guitar or piano moment to end the score with. The song "Soul Brothers", sung by Patti Labelle is a perfect song after all this funky music.

It's like Faltermeyer never left the film music world. Cop Out is written in the same style like we remembered him, and for some this might be a disappointment. But if people dug that 80's style then, full of cheap shot sound effects and likable main theme cues, I'm sure Cop Out will not be a disappointment whatsoever. It's surprising to see Faltermeyer back in action, and more actually having his music on a CD release, but I won't find it surprising if some people will actually go out and buy this. After all, a project like this doesn't come a lot anymore.
