Domestic Disturbance

Mark Mancina

" It's like Basic Instinct without the sex "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

It seems to be with every Mark Mancina score I review, that I begin with the fact that it's been a while since we last heard of him. Don't know why this always happens because surely Mancina is not the weakest composer out there, far from it. Now in 2001, he still delivered two scores and both weren't exactly his genre back at the time. It were basically two thrillers, and one of them was entitled Domestic Disturbance.

Of course by being a thriller score, you better expect the usual stuff when you get to a tense, fast or action oriented moment. So, not a lot has changed there. But in retrospect it is also Mancina's clever use of reversing the temp score into an original and fascinating work on its own that makes it somewhat worth it. Sadly the temp score was Jerry Goldsmith's amazing Basic Instinct which shows up from begin to end. Luckily Mancina doesn't massacre it.

The first three tracks are especially the surprise of the score. Here, the main theme of Basic Instinct makes its way into a fascinating and quite original (to the point that it can get original) theme of its own. Mancina's own version is good and appears a lot of times, the most in the first three tracks of the album. "Domestic Disturbance" shows this the best.

Further along the soft soothing version during "Guys Sailing" and its reoccurring version during "Bitter Suite" keeps making the score better then most of you would have guessed.

Still, the moody thriller tones creep up and then you get what you expected in the first place. Hell even Mancina can't change that. "Rick threatens Danny" is the least melodic one of the bunch and uses a flute main theme performance (The Haunting spot on). Still it isn't over. "Fight / Aftermath" (which is the closing track of the otherwise extremely short album) is simply the chase music of Basic Instinct (meaning the excellent chase theme). But again this is put into good effect by Mancina.

You may like or dislike the fact of temp track influences, but I think Mancina did use this influence much better than what most would have come up with. It is nothing that will blow you away but I'm still surprised. Domestic Disturbance didn't have a lot of possibilities to go anywhere in this genre, especially if they already gave it a sound. Luckily we have enough development, a wall of sound during the louder moments and a great sound recording to keep you interested. If you take all this in consideration, I'm surprised that Domestic Disturbance turned out this well.
