Driving Miss Daisy

Hans Zimmer

" Driving out with the old, coming home with the Zimmer new "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Driving Miss Daisy of 1989 is a movie that has a lot to say. For instance Jessica Tandy was the oldest winner ever to receive an Academy Award, it is the only film based on an off Broadway production ever to win an Academy Award for Best Picture, and it has an entire synthesized score by Hans Zimmer (which won a BMI Film Music Award and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture). That last fact is of course fun for us, but it also tells us something about the way Zimmer could make his scores entertaining without a single live instrument.

Because I would swear some elements would / could be live when I hear "Driving" commence. Anyway this opening track (of Zimmer's score at least) has the main theme of the score, the now overtly known playful tune that is performed a lot by Zimmer when he does a live concert. After it we receive several new themes, including a theme that could pass as a Jewish theme (representing Jessica Tandy). And besides that we have the friendship theme, repeating it's subtle strength in "Driving" and "Home".

And so as the themes create their own strength, so too we have that undeniable catchy main theme driving around the entire score, just as the characters do in the film. It's bouncy opening (with an undeniable sampled sitar or guitar) in "Georgia" and its delicious bouncy encore in "End Titles" make for some of the best moments of the score. Though the score is incredibly short, something tells me we have everything we need. If people only need the theme, I guess there are other means to experience it (The 1st Film Music of Hans Zimmer compilation of Silva Screen is an option, or the equally brilliant version on The Wings of a Film compilation). For those that consider them to be loyal Zimmer fans, there's no need to pass on the sampled but delightful tunes of Driving Miss Daisy.
