Irmin Schmidt is well known as the founder of music group CAN and composer of scores for German films and tv-series. After the career-spanning Anthology Soundstracks 1978 – 1993 release by Spoon records, they’ve now returned with another 2 disc, marking the 4th and 5th volume. The first disc focuses on his feature film scores to Palermo Shooting and Schneeland, while the second disc includes cues from famous TV-series like Bloch and Tatort and much more.
The highlight of the two volumes is without any doubt the score selections from Palermo Shooting, written for a film by Wim Wenders. He borrows music from Johannes Sebastian Bach for a theme in a cello, accordion and jazz trumpet variation that are supported by warm and shimmering electronic textures. The use of electronics does justice to his reputation as a keyboard player and brings something of a great evocative quality to this score. A digital release of the full score is also available. All the other selections weren’t bad either. In fact, I found myself enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and the jazzy influences throughout both the volumes.
Overall this is a career-spanning compilation with almost two hours of excellent music. Those who already own the Anthology release should not hesitate to purchase it, nor should those who like to be introduced to a new composer.
