Flesh and Bone

Thomas Newman

" Thomas Newman presents 'A Dark Tale' "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Flesh and Bone is a dramatic movie starring Meg Ryan, Dennis Quaid and James Caan. It goes about a boy who witnesses his father brutally murder a family. Thirty years later, he meets and falls in love with the baby that was spared. Enough dark drama to call the help of Thomas Newman. His score for Flesh and Bone isn't one that's recommended a lot, and the reason is simple. It's not one that holds a lot to recommend of. Only 1/3 of this score's material could make it on a Thomas Newman compilation, and that's because the solo violin paints some typical Newman color in some of the tracks.

Those moments are "Blue Dimes", "Two Ride Together" and "Everything He Told You (End Title")". Those moments feature a lovely solo violin heard during the typical Newman moments (the guitar and the flute in particular). Because, as the story might predict it, this is a dark tale. So don't be surprised to hear a lot of moody, atmospheric cues that are short in time, and brief with ideas. In fact, most of the time Newman unleashes some sound effects, whether it are bird calls or some musical ideas gone awry. ("Hinge", "The Picture", "Flesh and Bone", "Cicadas", "Lazy J") to name a few.

Truthfully, Flesh and Bone is typical Thomas Newman material. It's him you hear all right, but it's mostly mood and not exactly memorable music. It's a background score that will stay at the background a lot longer than you might want. So considering not a lot of people talk about it actually sums it up that Flesh and Bone is just not good enough. The last track would definitely make it on a compilation, but the rest is just rather forgettable I'm afraid.
