Flight of the Navigator

Alan Silvestri

" Simplistic but entertaining kids score by Silvestri brings a difference in his career "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the promotional release

Sometimes it's really fun to turn back to those little scores that made them big. Everyone has one of them that sounds just right, not good but not bad either. I consider Flight of the Navigator as one of Alan Silvestri's best examples in this category. This score will not please many fans, but it sure will not bore them. So you can see that even the greatest of their time have used their skills on these kind of movies.

I believe the fans will know something about this score. But for those who know nothing and don't have anything against throwing their money against a short but pleasant listen will feel that Flight of the Navigator just packs the right doses and flair.

I must of course confess, this is not something that sounds Alan Silvestri. It has the trademarks, most importantly the feel and sound of the score The Clan of the Cave Bear. After all this was composed in the same year. But it surely shows that Silvestri composed the music all right. It is simple but effective, making it especially cool for the younger version of yourself. I especially like the nice theme in "Robot Romp", for me it still is so damn cool, even after all this time.

The main theme of Flight of the Navigator sounds mysterious but becomes more adventurous when it's also used faster and bolder. "Ship Drop" is the best example of this.

See Flight of the Navigator as your background listen, short but to the point. It is somewhat simple but effective and overall a pleasant listen throughout. It works fine as background material, it is pleasant on the ears but don't expect the grandness of some of his other adventure scores. I knew what to expect, and so thereby I couldn't be disappointed at all by the lightweight nature of the music.
