Green Card

Hans Zimmer

" breezy Hans Zimmer experience "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Green Card seems like a long lost memory, but it did win a Golden Globe for best motion picture and for the performance of actor Gérard Depardieu. And let's not forget the Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. Furthermore it was directed by Peter Weir (Oscar nominated director of Witness and Dead Poets Society). Meaning there was enormous quality on board. You could add Hans Zimmer to that list if you want to, but somehow Green Card wasn't one of Hans Zimmer's most popular soundtracks. Is it because it was not action based? Or wasn't it interesting enough for the die hard Zimmer fans without the addition of a powerful anthem? God only knows.

The score opens nonetheless interesting enough with an ethnic tilted cue called "Instinct". The vocal pre dates Gladiator (if one could make any assumptions) and ignites a certain quality to the rhythmic cue that makes it totally tantalizing and quite original. And for that the original idea of Green Card. Because what follows after that is Hans in all his (90's) glory. "Restless Elephants" breaths the music and tone of scores such as Days of Thunder and Regarding Henry, and delivers a typical catchy and breezy theme in the aforementioned "Restless Elephants" and "Cafe Afrika". After that the tone changes in happy rhythmic music for "Greenhouse" and its expansion "Silence" (holding a catchy tune) and dramatic piano music in "9am Central Park" and "Asking You". Not before finishing with a combination of all the best theme statements in "Pour Bronté" (including a humming Depardieu at the beginning). By the way, this track received a pleasant orchestral performance in Silva Screen's 2007 compilation Film Music of Hans Zimmer.

Green Card might feel and sound like lots of different things for most people now. But there's an undeniable charm coming from Zimmer's synthesizers music of the 90's, and hearing all those tiny little sounds (that would form some of the biggest themes of his career (the pan flute from Rain Man to name but one)) make the listen a relaxing and enjoyable one. Again not high art but just perfect music for a romantic comedy and thereby initial listen.

Favorite Moment - Silence (1.37 - 2.35)
Typical Hans Zimmer 90's bounciness, you gotta love it!
